I hope not because I dont want to have to spend money on forged pistons and bore the block again since OE pistons in this compression ratio are not made any bigger then .5mm oversize, but on the other hand I think the only one that may be damaged would be the one that was drinking all the fuel.

Worse case scenario is if the block is damaged and I have to spend the money, I will swap in the F2/FE3 hybrid instead of spending the money on the BP.

I learned an expensive lesson or 2 on this one.

Kids remember:

Take your time on a rebuild and dont try to cram too many things into a 2 week vacation and right before your moving.
Dont try to tackle to many unknowns at one time unless you have the time to make sure its right.
Always verify injectors that you buy or just have them cleaned and flowed before throwing them in something you spent time and money on.

Tore the engine down yesterday and found the reason the compression was getting worse in that cylinder.....All this happened in 700 miles




I have no idea how that oil ring came out of the piston groove. It could have happened when I installed the pistons in the block, or the bore was not correct, or some other unknown reason. All pistons installed very smoothly and I would think if it happened when I installed it that it would not have gone in as easy as it did....

The other 3 bores had this on the skirt side of the bore: Idk if that is from the block being bored without a torque plate or from some other unknow reason.


Nothing has gone right with this build thus far and I am highly frustrated right now on what comes next. I plan to measure the groove in the bore to see how deep it is and decide what to do next, but I have a few scenarios in mind:

1: Get a spare engine or block from the junkyard and have it bored for the pistons I already have. $200 plus $450 machine work (bore/deck/hot-tank)
2: Depending on the depth of the groove get some forged 11:1 Supertech pistons not exceeding 85mm and bore the block again. $470 plus $150 machine work (bore only)
3: Get an F2/FE3 hybrid and drop that in either stock or rebuilt and make the BP electronics work with it and pass emissions. $200 engine plus $120 transmission plus $200 misc swap parts plus $500 custom forged pistons...plus a lot of time

Number 2 is the cheapest solution surprisingly but now would be the perfect time to attempt number 3.....

James, there is an EGT in the Ecology yard on 27th Ave but it is a high miler. I am going to their south yard on Broadway in the morning ( across where you used to work) I will let you know if they have any decent Protege LX's there or even a Kia Sportage.

Well I went and tried to measure the bore today and see how bad it is but using an inside caliper is not really the right tool for the job so I bought a cheap set of telescoping bore gauges from ebay.

Regardless I did get a rough estimate of 83.6 to 84mm so I may have to go all the way to an 84.5mm piston if I want to still use this block, although I am not going to rely on that measurement till I can get a more accurate tool.

Yeah let me know what you find. I prefer the yard on 25th Ave and buckeye better then ecology, you should try that one out.. Ecology is or was a ripoff

I was there last weekend and there was 0 protege LX's and I don't recall an EGT. I went to Ecology on Broadway ( all import) today and they have a couple Lx's. Also went to their 27th Ave yard today...still the same EGT. They have a half price day on Nov 29th Black Friday. That puts a motor at about 125-150 I believe.

Got my telescoping bore gauges and it looks like the depth of the groove is not that bad. Max diameter measured was 83.5mm, so an 84mm piston will be required to use this block again.

Still planning on the FE3/F2 swap, but I will be taking my time to collect parts and make it all happen. I am still in for the 2 mounts.

I may save the BP for something else or try to sell it.

There is a slim possibility that I may try to find an earlier escort 5 door hatch (91-93) to swap the FE3/F2 in and keep the BP in this car to sell or just keep for a spare.

SOHC crankshaft

Fidanza aluminum flywheel
Kia BP cylinder head--brand new HLA's, new stem seals, hot tanked and shaved .006", all valves cut to a mirror finish.
KY Kevlar/organic clutch with new TO bearing
BP block--hot tanked, decked .010", all new brass freeze plugs. Needs bored to 84mm or more to be usable, otherwise good.

Kia crank, water pump, and alternator pulleys, and ribbed belt.


U/K hybrid VAF and stock airbox. Airbox is modded to allow K-code to bolt up.

GTX injectors

Brand new Oil pump
Brand new Water pump

Brand new timing pulley's
Solarwing for EGT
