I will have to check when I get home how many it has, but in addition I forgot to mention that the second ECU plug comes out and connects directly to the fuse box with a large connector. That's a lot of wires to have to extend. Moving the battery to the trunk is better for weight distribution and extending 1 battery cable is easier anyway.

Made a couple brackets out of some aluminum I had lying around and got the Mazda 3 ECU and fuse box mounted up where the battery used to sit. Went and tore apart all the extra harnesses from that car to salvage the stuff I need and build the section that runs into the passenger compartment. Overall I dont think this will be any harder wiring it all up than when I installed the BP before.

Started working on the transmission again today, cleaned the case out, pulled the other bearing races out, dropped in the M-factory diff and installed the new bearing race/shim in the rear case. I will hopefully be picking up the new bearings for the shafts I need to finish this thing tomorrow from a local bearing supplier instead of getting them from Mazda.

Finally got all my bearings from Mazda and was going to finish putting togethor the transmission yesterday only to discover the toolkit I bought is either wrong or another tool kit is needed with it. I ordered the second toolkit listed in the service manual off ebay, so I hope to have this done next week.

Removing and replacing bearings on the shafts is pretty straight forward as long as you have what you need in the garage. Luckily I did.

The gears on the shafts are to big to fit in the press so having a bunch of 2x4's stacked up with press plates on top and a bearing splitter allows you to remove the bearings without much trouble. Installing them is easy if you have something that will fit around the shaft while still being able to sit on the inner race of the bearing to press it on without damaging it. Next time I update this thread I hope to have the trans together and bolted to the engine for test fitting.

Anybody have a Kia BP or KL jackshaft they can measure the outboard diameter of for me?

I did a little test fitting tonight.........




Surprisingly or maybe not surprisingly, the mount situation wont be that bad:
Rear torque mount- OEM EGT
Transmission frame rail mount- EGT bracket/MX3 KL mount dont ask me why, but this combo fit best vs using only EGT or only KL stuff.
Front torque mount- Completely custom bracket and EGT mount due to the starter being right where the bracket would normally go---I am hoping anyway
Engine frame rail mount- The best solution right now seems to be removing the OE bracket, drilling 2 holes in the top of the frame rail, welding a couple of nuts in place and using the Mazda 3 mount.

Intake manifold has to be removed to install the engine and reinstall it after mounting the engine, which also means the OE radiator cant be used anymore and I will have to run the Civic radiator and 2 fans since I have A/C in a puller/pusher setup.

Overall the engine fits between the frame rails with about the same space as the KL does in the MX3, but it barely fits under the hood and the oil pan is about level with the bottom of the control arms.

pick yourself up a griffin core radiator like i did & mod it so that you have something of decent capacity that fits in between the rad support.
can you get some more angle shots of the belt side mount too???

2- or 3-row Civic radiator will work just fine, unless the MZR has weird cooling requirements...

What do you mean the outboard diameter? Or can you give me a picture of what you want measured. I have a second gen 95 es bp trans which im almost sure is the same as the kia bp trans. Give me that pic so I can measure it for you.

I will get you some pics of the oil pan but it may be a while since I should be getting that toolkit this coming week so I will be pulling the trans back off the engine to finish assembling it. Do you want pics of the front of the engine where the mount attaches or the actual mount itself?

The radiator situation is kind of pending since there are a couple of ways to approach this: Try to move the engine toward the firewall a little more to run the stock one, get a custom core made, or run a Civic one. The last one seems easiest and cheapest since its popular and an off the shelf solution.

I also seem to have somehow lost all the engine to transmission bolts for this thing so I will be ordering those from the dealer and maybe find a used fuse box thats not all busted up like this one I have.

So I have to think about what I am going to do about a header for this swap. I was thinking about trying to modify the SMSP BP header I have but it was designed for something with much smaller displacement and I don't really want to destroy a one off item. After doing some looking around a Honda K20/24 swap header looks ideal for this situation pending it's not too far off and would only need a flange swap and some "adjusting".

Anybody have access to one for measuring?

I used a 1 to 2 micrometer and a caliper. I got 1.133 on the micrometer and 1.144 on the caliper

That's great news, thank you. That means the axle problem is solved and any Kia or KL axle will work.
