    slow progress is progress

I also noticed that the motor does NOT have the attachment points for a hoist.. And I don't have any liying around. Need to track down some and hardware to attach. Either way, I didn't let this stop me. Used a couple small ratchet straps to make magic happen.

Upon a closer look at things now, I've discovered a 'problem' on the exhaust cam. the notch where the dizzy locks into place, seems to have a chunk missing from it.

On the bottom. There is loose material that I was able to flick off away from the internals... not swell

That's the plan. Test fitted all the bits I've collected so far actually to make sure it's complete.

I've experience a rock getting kicked up past underbody protection on the rally truck into the engine bay, taking all my belts with it on it's way back out. Any little bit helps.

And since I won't be running adjustable cam gears any time soon (at least on this build) i don't NEED ease of access.

Not sure on how I feel with the e cam at this time. I don't feel like it's a problem, but if I'm able to score another, I'll absolutely swap them out.

Mt. Hood Rally was yesterday. I took Friday off from work to go spend the day in Portland at You-Pull-Its, seeing as they no longer exist in Central Oregon.. Found everything I was looking for at the first yard.

            KIA Valve Cover
            Kia Upper Intake Manifold
            Protege LX Exhaust Manifold
            626 K-Code MAF (building a hybrid)
Water Pump Pulley bolts (not shown)
            Engine Lift Loops (not shown)

Only things I didn't pick up, which also weren't on the list were an exhaust cam. Just as a back-up, and the crank bits. No large nose crank motors were there. And I wasn't expecting to disassemble it there either...

After additional reading on the kia intake, I kind of feel like I needed the TB now? confused as all the material I read prior, i didn't need that, but now I'm not so sure

Good day in the yard. Only bled once!

I don't know what you needed for crank parts but the Kia BP is a big nose, it's just that the pulley is ribbed and not a v-belt.

Regarding the upper intake, idk what you have read but it's not that hard to modify it to work with your stock TB. The Kia TB has a different TPS and IAC more like a Miata and would never work anyway.

Crap, I never thought about the kia at the time. I just kept thinking mazda/fjord...

Would rather be at Wild West Rally right now.. But funds are too tight. Instead the lady went out to get her hair did, and I made some progress while she's away.

Re-arranged things in the garage. Got rid of the damn lazyboy that's been taking up SOOO much space, and moved the EGT in to get nice and cozy for the winter.

Will be joining jackstand racing tomorrow after I confirm with her that the car is in a good location for her to get around in there. Other than that, ripped the hood off and starred at it a little.

We have some overhead lighting fixtures that a friend gave us from their shop. Really getting ready to say 'forget it' on waiting to afford proper wiring the garage (1 outlet works, and we were going to get 220 installed) as i'm in dire need of light.... a ****ing 50w bulb doesn't do justice.. and my dinky plug-in shop light isn't quite adequate either.

Oh and uh.. don't tell her, but I used to Forester to push the car up the driveway and into the garage. At least onto level-ish ground.

you dont need an electrician to run a DC wiring circuit. setup some LED's in your garage and run the lighting off 12/24v DC

220v would be handy for an air compressor of good size/welder

Yeah, that 220 is for a compressor we got from her relatives... Monkey Wards exclusive (it's old.....)

I did however setup a couple of the plug-in flourescent units we got from the friends... They're up there.. With zipties and extension cord! (1 plug in the garage...)Click image for larger version

This is where we are currently. Engine WAS on it's way up and out, then ran into clearance with the crank pulley on sheet metal while trying to clear the trans intself. Motor bolted back to the trans so I can take them out together. Running into little issues along the way, as usual.. But it's making slow progress none the less.

                          • All electronics unplugged from engine and trans
                          • Power steering pump removed
                          • A/c Completely removed from engine bay (still have w/e is left in the HVAC unit itself, but planning on yanking that)
                          • Cruise control is unplugged and resting on the windshield until I get inside the car to unplug it
                          • Removed bumper and fender liners to make access easier
                          • removed Wiper Fluid reservoir temporarily (considering relocating/aftermarket model)
                          • removed coolant reservoir temporarily (considering aftermarket model)

I've found some damage on the front passenger corner. Minor wrinkles. Discovering why it was a branded title. Radiator support has some minor damage.. Not worth replacing, but it's noticeable upon close inspection

I also keep coming up with ideas for a little more rally prep as I go. Whether or not I'll tackle those now, or down the road is up in the air.

I've always been in the air on even calling myself a 'backyard mechanic'. Never a problem doing fixes and stuff that are a days job. However, now that I'm tearing things down, it feels pretty hardcore (mediocre for some I'm sure) but I'm actually enjoying the fact that I'm taking time (ok, maybe a little too much...) and learning about everything under the hood as I go.

its always a fun learning experience once you dive headfirst into a project like this. just make sure to document what bolts are from what area & keep them in baggies. that'll keep life easy

I feel like this is my first post on the forum in 2016... yikes..

I have not made any progress for a while. it's been quite cold, and the heater has been busted. It's left me in the dumps on the EGT, and i've been looking at alternatives.

I have been considering just getting the car back together, and selling it, to get another set of wheels that I'm beginning to really fancy. Or maybe just sell as-is.. But.. who would want to buy the 'project' in it's condition out here in Central Oregon... Nobody... Good luck there buck-o

Then I remembered something. Why I'm doing this to begin with. It's a fun car.. That's really all. Yeah, I want to road race/rally it.. but other than that, it's a fun chassis. And I have it.. and I have all the bits for it.

I would be absolutely freaking insane to get rid of the car once it's re-assembled... It has a BRAND NEW motor, rebuilt transmission, brand new suspension, brand new upgraded brake system, the wiring is being re-done.. Accessory pumps have been replaced.. I mean, darn near everything that makes the car operate, is either brand new, or the next best thing... And I'm still less than $2,000 total into the build (including car) i think..

So, tonight, I went out and replaced the broken crap on the heater in the garage, got it working. Impact gun came in the mail today. Hopes that it has enough oomph to just get me out of the hole enough to get the engine and trans OUT of the car. Or I'm going to considering raising the car enough to drop the engine out the bottom...

At this moment, I'm motivated. I need to be driving the damn thing. I'm going nuts living out here and having not DRIVEN in almost a year. (yeah i drive a 1st gen forester automatic to and from work.. but nothing spirited. it's a tired car...)

Oh, and i sat in the car.. It was nice... Let's see how far I get this time. Plan to turn wrenches tomorrow
