This is the tool used in all the vids. Its made by Lisle and Licensed to various tool retailers like Snap-on, Matco etc..... which in turn charge more money for it. You will need to use the smaller one in the kit to fit the BP head, but I cant seem to find it being sold separately.

If your wondering why I'm putting the block back into the car and assembling it from there, it's because I want to be able to deal with hoses and wires that would otherwise be very hard to access. I can route them with special care that would be hard otherwise. I really don't know if it's going to turn out better. I'm taking a risk. I think a certain portion of the problems I had with this car came from putting generic hoses into places that were designed for fitted hoses. Vac, heater, fuel, ect.
Vacation is over. I'm going to try and work on it at least some, every day.1991 Protege LX with GTX swap, DD1990 4WD Protege with GTX swap, Project/garage decoration2006 Mazda 3 with 2.3, Her car1980 Ford F100 Short bed with 300ci 6 cylinder, work truck/home for moss

DYI parts washer
IF you have access to compressed air, you can clean, degrease and restore the finish on automotive parts (and anything else really, not just DSMs) using the ...
I'll usually pay myself $10-$15 bucks an hour when trying to figure out if it's worth the effort. Having the block tanked was $40 bucks. This looks like it might be worth it since there's still a lot of cleaning to do.
Got the parts in today. I still need a piston ring installer and a wrist pin tool. I think I've decided on renting a valve spring compressor. I think I'm going to paint the mounting brackets/braces too, assuming the parts washer works as described. The head needs cleaned anyway, and since I have most of the parts to make it work, why not. It'll save me money at the machine shop and make for a better overall finish.Last edited by 1st Gen; 04-15-2015, 12:47 AM.1991 Protege LX with GTX swap, DD1990 4WD Protege with GTX swap, Project/garage decoration2006 Mazda 3 with 2.3, Her car1980 Ford F100 Short bed with 300ci 6 cylinder, work truck/home for moss

I went to Harbor Freight and looked for the siphon nozzle but they didn't have one. When Costless didn't have it either, I decided to bag it and bought two more cans of carb cleaner. It was fun while it lasted.

Nothing big going on of late. Just cleaning, scraping, and painting. I did hit a snag with front main seal, as in it's about 5mm too big. Is the GTX oil pump different than the regular BP?
Time to run down to NAPA and see what I can come up with.Last edited by 1st Gen; 04-17-2015, 05:25 PM.1991 Protege LX with GTX swap, DD1990 4WD Protege with GTX swap, Project/garage decoration2006 Mazda 3 with 2.3, Her car1980 Ford F100 Short bed with 300ci 6 cylinder, work truck/home for moss

^ I highly encourage you to use that for your paper gaskets..... or reuse the oem ones if they are SS(with a thin coating of ultrablack RTV)
you can soak the paper gaskets with that spray. which makes everything quite nice
what year pistons are those??? rockauto??
The pistons are 9.5:1, part number P430A
Crank bearings, part number, MB 400
Rod bearings, part nuber, RB 400
Thrust washer, TW 400
I'm not going to post the gasket kit because it turned out to be the wrong one. The head gasket is correct though, as are both manifold gaskets. It's mostly the difference between the crank sizes.1991 Protege LX with GTX swap, DD1990 4WD Protege with GTX swap, Project/garage decoration2006 Mazda 3 with 2.3, Her car1980 Ford F100 Short bed with 300ci 6 cylinder, work truck/home for moss
