    normal cylinder compression readings?

can anyone tell me what the average/normal cylinder compression numbers are in psi for a 90-94 protege/91-96 Escort BP are?

My cylinder compression test before i bought the car (yes i checked compression!) was 210, 200, 197, 205psi cyls 1-4.

just wondering what normal was for this engine. thanks in advance.

Did you remove all the sparkplugs, take the intake hose off, Hold the gas pedal to the floor before you cranked it to check the compression?

Just buy the tool and do it urself, shops will charge by the hour, which is like probly $50 american/hour.

I say that because it might cause a restriction with the air filter and all. It's not necacary but i do it ot make sure it's a accurate as possible.

i didnt remove the intake hose, but i did remove all spark plugs and hold the pedal to the floor. i hear that the pedal to the floor causes the computer to halt fuel flow to the cylinders.

what would happen if i were to try to test it with the other 3 plugs in and leave the gas pedal alone?

so by your guys' other numbers, my cylinder compression seems to be 'bout perfect.

You take the other sparkplugs out so compression doesnt build on the other cylinders. And the pedal to the floor is just to make sure that the butterfly valve is open so there isnt a restriction on the intake stroke.

yup, a decent compression guage doesn't even cost $30... and you probably already have the tools to remove spark-plugs and your intake hose

ah, so really removing the other plugs shouldnt change the compression reading at all.. but having the throttle valve closed would probably increase the reading slightly then..?

i paid $30 for my compression gauge, i use it alot surprisingly, it cost well over $100 to have an engines compression read at my local dealerships.
