Even if you drain out the fuel, you will still have enough fuel vapors to go off like a bomb. It is a good idea to be careful around fuel tanks/systems. If a power wire brush saves you 20 minutes compared to doing it by hand, what's the big deal.

I would much rather spend the 20 minutes instead of blowing myself up.

The motor from a dremel can cast off an occasional spark. I've also gotten lots of sparks from wire brushes. Even brass ones.

There are times when you move quickly, and times when you move carefully.

Yeah b
ut what about the fuel pump assembly? Mazda uses little screws to hold the cap... on the Escort I've seen no holes for screws. Only a big hole for the fuel pump assembly. Unless I haven't looked enough ... lol

They also make stiff nylon type brushes that would work well at scraping off the rust

ugh... DUH.... use the escort ****...... but if i was you i wouldn't even try the swap... a protege gas tank does not fit in a 323. what makes you think a EGT one will fit?

That's why I'm asking...

I don't know about you guys but up where I live rusted gas tanks on Protegés are a common failure so when I picked up that EGT parts car I kept the gas tank just in case it could fit my Protegé.

If my current gas tank ever fails I'll test fit the EGT one then we'll know for sure.

Well I've had both tanks in my hands (empty of course) and the EGT plastic tanks seemed a little lighter.

I kept it since it was with the parts car so it's sure I'll give it a try someday.

I think the EGT has a smaller tank IIRC. Try some naval jelly... it works wonders
