VARIABLE INERTIA CHARGING SYSTEM (VICS)
By varying the length of the intake air path in the intake manifold and dynamic chamber, the resonance induced inertia charging effect is improved, yielding higher torque and a wider torque band.
The length of the intake track is controlled within the intake manifold and dynamic chamber by opening and closing the shutter valve at 5,000 rpm.
The VICS consists of the shutter valves, shutter valve actuator, three-way solenoid valve, vacuum chamber and ECU.

Actually VTEC = Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control. And VTEC usually has both the cams adjustments that kick in AND i believe some have the butterflys as well that open at high revs but i could be wrong.**SOLD** 93 EGT with more suspension mods then your average riced out civic's # of decals + useless "bling/style/culture" mods!**SOLD**
95 EGT New beater! And gawd damnit shes NOT pink!

Well if they think Mazda's have VTEC then they should be shot on sight anyways!**SOLD** 93 EGT with more suspension mods then your average riced out civic's # of decals + useless "bling/style/culture" mods!**SOLD**

like everyone said, vtec is very different.
vics in simple terms is this:
in the intake manifold, there are two sets of runners (runners are how the air travels through to the motor). At a specific rpm range (really, it's vacuum load but yea..), the vics system opens the butterflies on the second set of runners (think of the butterflies opening like your throttle body plate and how it opens with more pedal/throttle) providing more air flow.Seth

VICS is a good design.
You want long intake runners for low end torque, and short runners for high end horsepower. The 1st gen intake manifold does a good job of combining the best of both worlds.[/QUOTE]

what if we cut the manifold and scrap the butterflies? then the VICS would be on all the time?
