91 323 Hatchback What engine can be swapped

I just recently traded for a 91 Mazda 323 Hatchback with only a 112,000 miles with the stock engine and stock 5 speed. What engine will swap into the car with ease... Im curious ! Cause i know i want more power outta the car

My first question is your name, do you want to make it a GTX because if you do you'll want to swap a B6T into it, or swap a B6D like I did and Turbo it later. The BPT is a great option and you could always swap a BP and later a Turbo if you can't find/afford an actual BPT. If you don't have time on your hands or a decent amount of cash I would avoid the K-Series swap even though it would be really cool.

Do some more research and searching on this forum and others to see what motor would suit you best. I'm very happy with my B6D as it went right in and produces a good chunk of power from first to the top of 4th pushing each gear. Once I get a Turbo setup on it I'll be even happier.

Good luck and keep us posted,
      MrH.

I just got out of the honda circle with a 1993 Honda accord with a jdm F22B swap and i know nothing about Mazda's. But I know i do wanna make the car like the 1.6 DOHC Turbo with the FWD platform for now. Between the 1.6 DOHC Turbo or the 1.8 DOHC turbo which would be the easiest to swap in and also wish to find a site to get all my Mazda parts at. And how much harder is it to do the AWD platform swap ?

Both the B6D(1.6L DOHC) and the BP(1.8L DOHC) drop right in for the most part, but finding the turbo stuff is a little different, you can find the BP turbo parts at Corksport.com and on Ebay from time to time, but you can find the B6D turbo parts at junkyards pretty easily as well as on Ebay, but they're harder to get from a retailer. The B6D is decently powered and if you want to take the time and effort you can swap the Cams and Crank from a Miata and add an extra 20 or so ponies(what I'm currently looking for) and you can get the turbo parts from a Mercury Capri Turbo or 88-89 323 GTX, I have yet to find a GTX at my local yard, but I have seen 3 Turbo Capri's and my dumbass didn't get the Turbo Mani off the one that still had it.

When it comes to the BP you can purchase an entire BPT all ready to go for $1500-$1800 on Ebay or keep an eye out online for someone selling one, or you could just buy a BP for anywhere from $200-$600 and turbo it later. Corksport sells the turbo mani and most if not all the other parts you'd need.

Our cars aren't too terribly hard to work on thanks to their earlier no frills technology, but the parts can either be really hard to come by or fairly pricey, it all amounts to patience. My suggestion, find a 1994 MX-3 with the B6D in it and complete interior, then swap the motor and interior into your 323, that's what I did and I was lucky enough to get the entire MX3 for $200. The nice thing about using the 1994 B6D is you get a Mass Airflow Meter instead of the VAF(I'm currently exploring options for increasing the MAF size) and you get VICS providing you with a little more efficiency and an efficient motor is a happy motor.

As for swapping the AWD in, you better have plenty of cash on hand as the regular 323 models aren't prepped for AWD meaning they don't have the tunnel for the rear end already in place. I t would take some serious fabrication to convert your 323 to AWD, but if you have nothing but money and time, more power to you.

I've only had my car for about a year and a half, but I've been patient with most everything on my car and I feel I've come along way since the first day I owned my car, just do your research and look at your options thoroughly before making your decision. I will say that I am happy with my engine choice and have put smiles on the faces of non-believers when I take them for a ride in it.

I have a good friend(like a brother) that always gives me crap about my 323(he's into Regals and Cutlass') and after I got the swap done he increased his level of BS, then I got some of the issues straightened out to where I could beat on it a little more so I took him for a ride, the first time I down shifted to pass someone and we got pushed back into the seats he laughed harder than anybody I've ever heard, when we got back to his house he popped the hood, took one look at the motor and said "We need to turbo this bitch!" and now he's more excited to turbo it than I am. I will say that I have driven a Pro LX with the BP in it and it is a fun motor with plenty of power, but the B6D revs like the B6(SOHC) and will keep you busy will driving hard, but that just makes driving my car all the more fun!

          Good luck
          MrH.

there's a bunch of stuff you can swap,. consoles, seats, maybe the dash..

well tune up parts are all readily available at any auto parts store.

              For performance parts, check corksport.com

only one more question for you guys... What 5 speed tranny should i link up to the B6T or BPT. I highly doubt you can use the stock 323 tranny that goes with the stock 1.6 sohc

you can, but you'd want to use the G-series tranny from a protege LX/escort GT/kia sephia

its stronger than the f-series in your car.

                        Sorry for the late reply!

I would swap the seats and carpet out of the MX-3(any year), the front seats fit right in, but you'll sit about 3 inches lower in your car and the rear seat(actual part you sit on, not the back) won't lock into place, I slotted the original clips so the loops on the seat would sit in the slots and I haven't had any issues with someone sliding out of the seat, so it's no big deal. The carpet is a much nicer carpet and really makes your interior much more tolerable. The dash would not be an easy swap, I believe the issue is the Heater Core is placed differently.

If you want a tach get a 90-94 Protege LX gauge cluster and also get the cupholder center console(just the piece where the shifter pokes through) from a Protege LX as well, even if you don't use the cup holders it makes a nice place to store things, think of it like a smaller glove box.

Finding parts isn't too difficult, I got my B6D plugs and wires from NGK.com and I will warn you that these two parts aren't as cheap as they were for my SOHC, I paid $35 for NGK Vpowers and wires, but paid $58 for NGK Platinums and wires for my B6D, but they are working really well in this motor. Oil Filters can be had at any auto parts dealer and even Walmart sells the top Frams and K&N filters(no flaming, it's just an instance). Cap and Rotor, I haven't really done much looking there cause I will just put stock replacements on mine and MSD it here before too long.

As for websites that I have found my parts on whether for the SOHC or DOHC:

Sportcompactonly.com They sell various parts such as threaded shift knobs, nice shift boots, and other various parts, I bought my VPowers for my SOHC from them at a really good price.

NGK.com Bought my Plugs and Wires, they have great customer service and really fast shipping

Corksport.com Good for Mazda parts in general

Ebay.com I got my Intake from here, it's Ractive, but it's well made and looks great under the hood, I have the big K&N filer going on it once it's clean

MX-3.com Good for info on the B6D and aftermarket, plus you can find stuff in the FS section

Either way you want to go is cool just formulate a game plan.

The axles will be fine, just make sure they're in good health. As for the fuel system, you'll want to get a better fuel pump like the Walboro 255lph, you'll also need the ECU, and Harness for that motor.

When you go to an auto parts store you'll just ask for 90-94 Protege 1.8L parts.

                            Good luck,
