Just change the fluid and run it. I had some shavings in my fluid when I changed it this spring and my trany made it though a full summer of abuse and it just now started grinding a little going in to 3rd. And I think it a little more related to numerous flat shifts with no studded box.
Just start keeping and eye out for a good deal on a good used one.

yeah there would be some metal shavings most likely.
the thing i noticed most in my car now that the new tranny is in... is that when i let off the throttle in gear it doesnt clunk anymore. i always thought it was my engine mounts (like.... for months), but in fact i guess it was the diff slowly crapping outEscort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. im in portland and i might have a spair tranny for 200 bucks... this one is perfect which is why its a might, because i may be picking up a pro lx for a DD and if thats the case ill want to hang onto it... we may also end up with something else and if thats the case then i wont need it.There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

thanks for all the info. i'm thinking i'll just change the fluid and see what happens because the car has been making noises that are really hard to explain although some of them were probably from the axle I just changed. usually I can tell what things are.
I actually have a spare rebuilt g box I found at the junkyard dated 04 but i'm waiting to throw it in until I change the clutch when I boost the car.
