Removing fuses...is it supposed to be that hard?

They seem to rip apart when I remove them forcefully. I have a real hard time removing them e.g. the "main" fuse in the engine bay.

Buying a new one is rough because no one stocks them, and I can never get to the dealer when they are open.

Any thoughts on how to remove these things easily in the future?

There is a screw on the side of the fuse box that holds it in. Remove that phillips-headed screw and it should come out easily.
