    Extrude Honing?...

Well I'm looking into extrude honing for me custom exhaust manifold.

Besides Kennametal does anyone know anyone else that does it?

Kennametal wants $485 to do a 4 cylinder iron manifold... ouch. Plus I'd have to send it down south to get it done. So if you know of a company up here in Canadia please let me know.

Check out what extrude honing does... Click here!
And here's Kennametal's automotive divisions website.

    Those prices are brutal

I say mix up a batch of silly putty filled with aluminum oxide. Find a plunger and go to town! lol

i dont think its worth it. maybe on an intake manifold but def not on an exhaust manifold.

Not on my custom turbo manifold with welds all the way through... so there's welding penetration inside the runners?

Will that even fit behind the radiator?

Yeah I still don’t think its worth it. You may see "a gain" from it, or you could turn your boost up like another 0.5psi and see the same amount of power. To me its pointless unless you are trying to extract the absolute highest possible power ever created with a BP... in which case you'd have a lot of other things to worry about before extrude honing the exhaust manifold.

After I throw on the GT3071R I have about 1/4" between the turbo and the radiator! HA!

Yeah, when the manny is done welded I'll make up my decision then... so far it's cost me $100 in parts and bunch of my own time to brew that up. So what's another $500, then it'll be a $600 manifold instead of a $100 manifold. Hehe...

get it running, dyno it... then pull the mani and have it honed. dyno it again. i bet you'll get hardly anything out of it at all, a difference equivalent to less than 1psi of additional boost.

to me it seems like one of those really fancy names that people like to throw around just to say that they have it. *shrug* its your $500...

BTW- off topic, but the other week when i was at the dyno i talked to a guy with a custom turbocharged chevy cobalt. he had that synapse BOV and WG. the BOV he loves, doesnt leak, works great... but apparantly the WG sucks.. very inconsistant boost. he's selling it and getting a Tial.

IMHO if you had to (like rules in your racig class state so) use the OEM cast pieces for the exhaust then extrude honing is worth it. On your manifold unless your welder isnt very good the penetration should be to the opposing surface and maybe a 1/16th to an 1/8th past that.

no problem, i hope it doesnt give you any issues... but if you're having problems keeping your boost consistent, you'll know why.

yea that price is about right. To get my GTR intake done its was $500.
Block is almost done, cylinders are overboard for Weisco pistons, pro gram billet main caps have been line bored, and my chinese EDT rods have been machined to right specs. Everything has been balanced.
