    RWD Conversion??

Hey guys, i was wondering what would be involved in a rwd conversion on my gtx. iv heard that you might be able to take the front cvs out directing all the power to the rear? is a standerd GTX gear box able to hold the load? will the diff go boom on me? jus curious as iv lost my licence for 6 months, so the GTX is gonna be parked up in the garage the whole time

any answers would be great. cheers

    nope. dont do it
you blow the center diff/gearbox in general with in a few hours of driving it hard

better off to cut the firewall out, and north/south the engine with a MX5/Miata (US Speak) gearbox and do it that way

There was a Familia GTR shell for sale on Trademe that had been converted to RWD for a 13b and has a tube frame.

There's also a GTX sedan on Trademe somewhere that's also been converted to RWD with a tube frame.

and after all that the rear end will need to be swapped out too. its tiny... same as the 1.6 liter miata. can barely handle 150ft lbs.

I bet a stock gtx motor would eat a locked centerdiff/disconnected front CV gearbox in minutes, not hours, way before the rear end lets go!

what bout if i get GTR drivetrain? would that hold up to the extra strain? dont want to start chopping firewalls or anything to obvious to the police eyes. theyre very strict in new zealand and would get it impounded an off the road as soon as they open the bonnet if i mounted the bpt N/S lol

You could buy an rx7, or miata. still a mazda, and already RWD!

GTR, same story, but with more-rare trans chunks on the tarmac.

What about a Low Volume Vehicle Certification Plate?

Why not just use an older Mazda 323 body that's already RWD?

they would never let it pass. theyr strict on certs because of the boy racer problem here. its easy to buy a rwd car, but theres nothing diferent about that, its all been seen before. a rwd gtx would be diferent and alota fun. was just wondering if there where any easy ways of doing it. my mate had a 4wd ceffy that could be made rwd by pulling out a fuse in the engine bay, iv also heard it can be done to gtr skylines. also have a rwd wrx here in christchurch aswell thats rwd. was just wndering if the gtx would be the same situation or close

yeah no such luck in the Mazda AWD world, the things are just to weak to take the strain.

The only sucedfull rwd bg i have seen an run is a escort. Its the yellow one from stp motorsports in florida, his shop is close to my house an i have seen the car run a the track. BEfore he went with a power glide he used miata trannys with rx7 diffs, custome driveshaft, motor mounts. Its was pretty crazy to see but it ran hard, just lots of fabrication but very doable. All depends how much u wanna spend to do it right the 1st time, know what i mean Vern..
