    oil dipstick reading

I know this is a dumb question, but I have to ask because for the years I have done my own oil changes, I think I've overfilled each time.

Red arrows; I always thought that since the F and L letters ran the length of the stick horizontally, that the top part of the F represented the full line, and of course the bottom part of the L represented the low line.

Green arrows; are these in fact what I should be going by? The line under F is the full line and the line above L is the low line?

    And the 0.8 means?

Could a mod please move this to the 1990-1994 Engine/Drivetrain board. I wasn't paying attention. Sorry.

    Edit - thanks!

How much oil do you put in when you change it? If I remember correctly, my BG called for 3.6 qts. I typically went ahead and put in 4. A little more (i.e. less than half a quart) isn't going to hurt anything. Besides, if you're using up oil between changes, that's just added security.

The green lines, near as I can tell, are the correct 'full' and 'low' lines, and unless I miss my guess, the space in between the lines is 0.8 qts., hence the '0.8' on the dipstick.

What does 3.6/3.8 quarts translate to for liters? Metric system up in here. Also, I don't burn or leak a drop.

European oil dipstick have 0.8 sign too, but qts isn't standard unit here. Maybe this 0.8 means (0.8*Full Volume) ?
              BTW, your version is logical
