Ace's Mildly Modded BP Dyno and 1/4

    My car
    94 Protege
    97 1.8 Miata BP
    BPT323 cut intake manifold
    CAI
    Rx7-vaf
    2.25" exhaust
    Pacesetter header
    2.5 KL v6 Clutch & PP
    G-series
    P/S & A/C delete

Well last night I went to Palm Beach International Raceway to run the 1/4. This was my first time ever going to the track, ever. I've never even really watched. After I went to tech I pulled into the staging lanes. As I was talking to the kid next to me he told me to drop my front tire pressure to 20psi. Well my first run I slipped the clutch and screwed it up and ran a 17.69 @ 81. After a couple I was getting used to it. I Ended the night with the last run with a 17.24 @ 83. Yes those runs are EXTREMELY slow, but my clutch isn't the greatest, I've never driven a 1/4 before and I've only driving my car with a 5 speed since a month or so ago. My times were consistently getting better in nearly every aspect but I would have liked to have gotten some more runs to get a better grip on launching. So overall I'm fairly satisfied with my time at the track, I only got 5 runs in and it had just rained so the track temps were low.

    As for the dyno...
Before I left for WP I let my tank get really low and then filled up on 93 octane. Before it was my time to dyno I advanced my timing by guesstimate.
For my first run the operator ran it all the way to 7k and it didn't detonate that I heard at all. Made 109.85whp and 101.94tq but it was a fairly flat curve. On the second run he heard some detonation and pulled the plug, so I bumped the timing back a bit. on the 3rd run he thought he heard a little detonation and cut it off again. I said w/e and bumped it back a tiny bit more and then he ran it for my 4th and final pull to get 115.32whp and 103.93tq. Although I have a bit more up top I don't have much down low. I'm pretty unsatisfied with those numbers considering whats done and shawn put down 119 last year on a stock bp with a catback.
Oh well.. Here's the media of my car

that motor has damn good compression, runs mint, has perfect vacuum and doesn't burn any oil. plus it has like 80k on it.

it doesn't make sense that Shawn's dyno pull last year netted him more power with less mods than Steven's this year... even taking different dyno's into consideration that sounds weird. Not that I was there for Shawn's run last year but the numbers don't make a whole lot of sense.

I see no a/f ratio stats... I am thinking you need tuning..

It's stock ECU, how am I supposed to tune? The Vaf is tuned to where it is supposed to be at. I'm not going to run a piggyback. I may get an MS just to see what I can squeeze out of a NA bp without internal work. And I guess his o2 wasn't working right or something.

mixing and matching mods is a game of give an take.

the wrong combo and you are pulling yourself in too many directions

the right combo lands you a usable power band.

                example:

today I made junkyard ZE, pump out an additional 15 HP and significantly improve my top end with 2 zipeties and a flathead.

personally i think your BP can make alot more power but you need to decide what you want from it before you throw parts at it.

Basically all of my mods are top end mods, they all make it flow better. It's not like any of them are fighting against each other.

still looking for my 119 pull dyno chart, but here is the video of the 323 doing 114 on a BP with a catback, filter, and MSD box.

                    NOTE: I made 114 with 99 tq

                    you made 115 with 104tq

you need tuning, start by yanking out that A-code for a U or B code, then tune again with that vaf open, look what it did for jinx

115whp sounds about right for a car that doesn't have a proper dyno tune! if you had of adjusted the timing with a gun and adjusted the vaf as well...you could have pulled an easy 5-7whp right there imo.

Brand of dyno can make a difference too. The last 3 shops I've worked at had dyno's and they were all a little different.

If it makes you feel better my festiva with a bp (supposedly $2k internally from previous owner), cam swap, toda cam gears, pacesetter header and 2.25 inch exhaust, and CAI made 108whp/111wtq.

                            Just my .02c.

If you cannot put the power to the ground you cannot get down the track... on super crappy all seasons I could pull a 2.4 60' all night long. that could dip you into the 16.9 range then add in all your slipping shifts (if thats the case). before my turbo I think I was in the 85mph range running a 16.7 all night long, and keep in mind this is a bone stock ford escort lxe (4 door gt) with my fat ass driving... just add a turbo and be down at 14.2 like I was
