    head bolts

    I have a spare engine (sohc ) in the driveway... My son's 94 is blowing major oil when he starts it...I don't care what the cause is I just want to change the head with the one in the driveway.... Think I can get away with reusing the same headbolts? the engines have over 300k km's so I don't really want the expense of new head bolts.... BTW how much are they anyways?

    OK so my buddy at Caps auto tells me he did it with his DOHC and drove over 30k kms with no issues.... head bolts are 10 bucks each and there are 10-12 of them...so I think I'll experiment

      If the head bolts are torque to yield then yes, if not then no.

      You can tell from the torque spec on the bolts. For example, if they give you a torque spec of 30 ft lbs, then turn 90 degrees for the next two steps, then they are a TTY bolt, if they give you a torque spec on all the steps, like 30, 60, and 90 ft lbs, then the bolt is a regular head bolt and can be reused.

        the BP IS IN FACT NOT TTY!!! i just went thru this with the mazda dealership. I checked Mitchell specs..not TTY, Chiltons specs.. NOT TTY and also Mazda said they didnt even know. Nothin on the BP as far as i know is torque to yield.

        im gonna reuse my main bolts and head bolts and call it good.
