engine on stand how to check for rod knock?

just bought a brand new engine that knock from the engine fml....

i asked this already and people said its the rod bearing but i think its the lifters i took the engine out put it on a stand and notice my fly wheel bolst were lose like really loose and it moved up and down since i used bolt tight green which makes sense why it sounds like death... now the rods r tight and compared to what i seen before when rod knock occurs there is no play i cant move them at all also my oil pick up was full of mud like sludge and i pulled 8.3 oz of sludge from the bottom of the pan which could be why the lifters werent getting enough oil... how do i know if i have rod knock now that the engine is out on a stand....

wow that's a horrible noise lol, doesn't sound like rod knock to me thought...it's usually a hollow deep noise. I say if you found loose flywheel bolts, you found your culprit.

The only way to spec out the rods/pistons/bearings is to disassemble and use the proper tools to check clearances. Generally rod knock will have some visible wear on the piston skirts tho, or you would see a damaged/spun bearing.

i bought a probe like 8 years ago that had a freshly rebuilt motor with a supposed rod knock. and it ended up being exactly what you said. i yanked the motor. and the flywheel bolts were only hand tightened. and the flywheel was getting knocked around. motor ended up being fine. so it does def happen!

even if its not the bearings cant i just replace them since im looking at them and if they r not damaged can i just replace them with standard size? this makes sense to me since they r standard size to begin with.....
