    coolant temperature sensoe

My car is a 92 Protoge DX with the 1.8L SOHC. about 175K miles and I bought it as a project car, it runs but has some issues.

I'm getting a check engine code 09 for coolant temperature sensor. I checked the "fan switch" sensor and replaced the guage / engine computer sensor (the one closer to the firewall) but there is still no reading on the guage even when the car is warmed up. There is a random wire that was hanging loose when I got the car, the only place I can see where it might go is a ground connection in the vicinity of the fan switch sensor - but if I make that connection the gage goes to pegged-high as soon as the ignition switch is turned on (engine cold). Anybody help?

It goes into the temp senor under the distributor.

      it's "sensor" people really

front of the head (front right corner when facing the motor from the front of the car) under the distributor, single spade connector (bare)
