    too hot? wont run...

ive had this problem on and off for a while now but its only been within the last few days that i actually figured out exactly what was happening. basically, when the engine bay temps get too hot, the engine dies. now, coolant temp is always exactly where it should be, the cooling system is working how it should be as far as i know. there's 2 specific times that i would have problems with this. one is if the engine is hot and i park the car. once it sits for a while, im assuming that heat from the engine works its way into whatever electronics are causing trouble. if the car is running, it will eventually start running rough, stall and not restart. if i shut it off when i park it, it won't restart after. the other time this problem pops up is on hot days when i spend a lot of time on the highway. while im moving, the car is fine. when i slow down of an off ramp or toll booth, the airflow through the engine bay slows down and i have the same problem. so, i kinda figure its a spark issue but i dont know for sure. would the coil or the distributor show these symptoms when they get hot? after a few minutes with the hood open, it will usually start back up and drive just fine until the next time i let it get too hot. any help would be appreciated.

fuel vapor lock? disable any of the emission controls relating to the venting of the gas tank, charcoal canister? relocated the fuel lines anywhere ?

next time it does it, check and see do you have spark or not... That'll go a long way toward finding out if it's electronics or vaporlock.

When it does it, it smells really rich, very strong smell of fuel. All of the fuel lines and emission controls are all there, all stock. I did bypass the coolant line that goes to the intake, it was leaking. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not but I doubt it. This car does have the common issue of losing fuel pressure on sharp rights, especially once the tank is low, but I can't see that being part of the issue either.

Sounds like it may be the ignitor.

havent had this issue again since i posted the thread. ambient temps are down (60's today, was 90's monday when i started the thread) so it's been fine. one thing i can add though is that when i have this problem, as long as i'm still driving, i can generally shift to keep the revs up and things will get better. it doesnt always work that way but generally if i keep the rpms up, i stand a better chance of keeping it moving. also, the first time i had this issue was about this time last year, i was on the highway and got slowed down through construction. the CEL came on and the codes i pulled (i dont remember what exactly they are) lead me to believe it was the distributor. i put on a used one and hadnt had any issues. i didnt realize at the time that the stalling was related to the hot start issues though. anybody have any other suggestions?

just curious if you have figured out this issue? I have been having this issue with the exact same car you have. I have searched and I have come up with possibly either the ignitor or coolant temp sensor being bad and saying the car is constantly cold and running the car rich when it gets hot.
