      Well, the car feels very sluggish under 3k rpm and once it hits that area, it feels like the car has giddy up. Like I was saying, maybe retarded timing. I can also feel the power pulse, even after 3k. It's odd. And the ignition coil is OEM. Are there any aftermarket upgrades that are recommended, or should I buy an OEM one?

        Guys, I may have stumbled onto something with the 3k power thing.. first off, it was on a Miata forum. They mentioned the distributor seal was leaking oil and caused issues with power delivery. They replaced the seal and obviously retimed the engine, which solved the problem. I think my distributor seal is leaking because of the oil collection around this area of the engine.

        EDIT: I also don't think the Miata owner advanced his timing.

          Worth a try and the o ring is easy to replace.

          It seems AEM makes a coil that will fit:

              Cam angle sensor o-ring, correct?

              and as for the coil, do you guys recommend the AEM unit? I don't want to drop $52 on something that I can't use.
              I also thought of something today. Know how the VAF contains the fuel pump shut off wires? When the VAF gets hot enough, does it shut down the pump? We've had some 120* days here, and I'm sure heat index/blacktop temp is even higher.

                Yes cam angle sensor o-ring.

                No idea on the coil, just found it today and never knew AEM made any coils till now. Looks like it only requires wiring, but you could always get a used OEM one to try first.

                The fuel pump shutoff is designed so when air stops flowing thru the VAF it kicks the pump off. Engine not turning=no fuel pumping.
                Nothing heat related like what your referring to otherwise it would shut the car down at traffic lights from heat soak.
