My Full Review of the 5th gear swap .717

Vehicle- 1994 Black Escort GT 1.8 manual 5 speed transmission. 3rd owner, rust-free, southern car, Low mileage.

Personal info- I have owned over 20 Ford Escorts. Most of the Escorts have been 2nd generation GT's with a combine seat time estimated 120,000+ miles behind the wheel.

I Installed the long 5th gear in my car 4,000 miles ago. and wanted to wait some time and get a good mix of driving before posting my review.

    City Driving Review
I drive 20miles to work, a 50/50 mix of out of the city easy cruising in a 55mph zone, and getting into the city with congested traffic and stoplights. I find myself spending a little more time in 4th gear than before just because 5th is now more for just cruising at more of a steady pace. Before the gear swap I typically got around 23-24mpg city driving, and now I find myself more near 25-26mpg.

    Highway Driving Review
This past weekend I drove a total of 350 miles each way for an extended weekend trip. On the way home I made a point to make an accurate highway MPG log. I traveled 290 miles on the highway at a consistent speed of 80mph aside from construction zones, and a few traffic slow downs. I didn't do any hard accelerating, just got up to speed and maintained my speed. I currently do not have working cruise control. My total average was 32.6mpg. I was so impressed to find that driving that fast would allow my mileage to be that high.

    Overall-
5th gear actually feels like an overdrive now.
I found a total rpm difference of 500rpm.
Top speed- (Performed on a closed course) Before the gear swap 5th gear would pull me up to about 115-120 if I stayed into it long enough, and with the new 5th gear it seems that it doesn't want to do much of anything past 115.
I am very happy with the gear swap, and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys getting better mileage, and doesn't plan to do any top speed racing.
It took very little time at all to install the parts, and was not very complicated.

    Stock
    60mph- 3,100rpm
    70mph-3,600rpm
    80mph- 4,100rpm

    .717
    60mph- 2,600rpm
    70mph- 3,100rpm
    80mph- 3,600rpm

I'm sure someone out there has a story of how much better their mileage was than mine. This was not intended to be a BS contest. I am not exaggerating my numbers. I just wanted to make a nice information thread of my review.

Good info, but what RPM did you have before and after in 5th at say 60, 70, and 80? i know you say it dropped by 500 but baseline would be helpful. i'd do a 5th gear swap, but I'm pretty sure .717 is what's in there now..
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

I have always said this is the bang for the buck and the only one that continues to pay you back.

OK then. I'm pretty sure my car went down the road right at 4 grand when doing 80. So now it looks like I need to find a .716 gear in addition to everything ekse the repkacement car needs. Dammit!

Jay, the 4wd 4.388 final ratio might be offsetting your .717 fifth gear some. 2wd G-series has a 4.105 final.

Yah that's me being hopeful. Car really needs a taller topgear and it hasn't got one.
