If you aren't hearing horrible noises, more than likely it's cables or linkage. Staaaaaart lookin!

With any luck you just have a disconnected cable and just need end bushings. Best bet these days, if you actually broke a cable, is a junkyard I bet.

You don't have cables. Your linkage is two rods. Check their ends and connections.

Check the shifter. It may have fallen.

Okay i checked the linkage everything seems normal wear and tear i watched it where it connects to trans. it goes in and out normally also turns but seems to not go all the way in as if there is something its hitting i looked right above exhaust where it connects to shifter and also where it goes into transmission it was dirty i cleaned it all up seemed to help a little where i get grinding in reverse "sorta" but all 2nd 4th and reverse still not there would it be worth putting new trans fluid in? Might attempt to look for used trans but for now ill drive it as it is. was only 200$ car so cant complain but would be nice to have reverse at least

Could be worn/missing bushings, or maybe a bent rod? What are junkyards like in your area? Any hope of finding a Protege or 323 or Escort in one?

Might not be the problem, but this happened on my car....

My case cracked around the bearing race for the secondary shaft right under the 5th gear assembly. The pieces were interfering with the rod that moves the gears actuating 2nd and 4th gear. You would need to remove the plate covering the 5th gear assembly to see if there are any metal pieces in there. It's a common failure point on G series transmissions.
