Need help. Spark? Distributor?

I just got myself a 1992 Mazda Protege DX with manual tranny and 281k miles on it, still drives strong and gets 40MPG! But, sometimes it starts running rough and losing power. Feels like it is misfiring or losing spark. It did it for me while I was driving on a highway for about 15 min and then went back to normal.
Any ideas what to check first? Check engine light is off.

intermittent problems are the toughest to troubleshoot. Have you done all the regular maintenance plugs/wires/cap/rotor, air/oil/fuel filters? O2 sensor? Checked all the vacuum hoses for cracking/leaks? Check the wire harness (especially injectors and ignition, and VAF ?)

Check the ignition module which is next to the coil

The problem went away with new Spark plugs.
Btw because the body rusted out, I now have a fully working SOHC engine and a working 5 speed manual for sale
