    Difference Between Ford '95 1.8 and '96 1.8 for Swap into 323

Does anyone know the difference between sy a '91-'95 Ford 1.8 and a '96? I have a lead on a '96 out of a Escort Gt I'm wanting to build and swap it into my '90 323, but I don't want to purchase it for my if its going to present challenges that I wouldn't find in a '91-'95.

Also, the ecu and transmission it was mated to isn't available, what ecu would I need to work with this '96 1.8, and will I need a '96 manual transmission or will any '91-'96 work? It is also worth mentioning that my 323 is an automatic and I'm obvious wanting to convert it to manual.

I've been researching this for 2 weeks and there are bits and pieces here and there to assist in my quest, but a direct answer here to my questions would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I know the engine should work fine. you might have to find a new temp sensor in the head.

Oh and what about an ecu and 5 speed transmission? Can I use any ecu and trans from a '91-'96. Do the have to be from a GT or could I use say something from a LX? I'm assuming I'll have to make some modifications to my existing harness, or so I need one from a particular vehicle? I ask this because it looks I'll be piecing everything together from different donors. What would be the ideal configuration (aside from pulling everything from one donor of course)?

Can anyone suggest a BG work log that will assist in helping me do my 1.6sohc to 1.8dohc and 5mt swap from a EGT into my '90 323 se auto? Thank you

everything is plug and play, with the exception of the chassis sidewiring harness. you'll have to do a bit of wiring @ the transmission connector plug to get things working properly- but its minor.

Thank you for that! I just scored a DOHC with 7k original miles in like new condition out of a '95. Picking it up Wednesday!

Just a note, some of the early 90 automatics used a separate computer for the transmission and engine. When I removed the automatic computer for a KL swap, I had to splice some wires which went into the auto computer on one pin of the connector before continuing to the ecu on a different pin and wire. I can't remember what signals those were though.

I really appreciate your insight. I might go with a standalone ecu although quite a bit more expensive. It will give me more flexibility though.

Here are the wiring diagrams for a 90 323 with that separate EC-AT computer. From looking quickly at it, the big one is the throttle sensor wire on ECU pin 2Z is interrupted by that computer.

                            EC-AT Computer:

                            Engine Computer:

Also, for a reference, here is a 91 Escort 1.8L ECU diagram:

Go through and see whats different. I see a lot of similarities to the 1990 323 ecu. The 96 Escort is very different from an ECU standpoint it seems, I guess since OBD2 came around, along with the addition of crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. I suspect you will want to use a 96 motor, engine harness and ecu, and patch into the 323 body harness. I don't know a ton about what can be switched around on the B series motors though. Easiest would be a earlier ecu and engine harness, as it would match closer with the 323 harness you have now, but I don't know if you could use this on the 96 engine.

                            96 Escort 1.8L:

Oh wow, that helps tremendously! Thank you for taking the time to post that for me.

Here's a quick video of it when I took it out of the garage yesterday in preparation for the swap. Some of its last moments with the 1.6 heart
