well its been a while so here's a few pics of the 94 tubular exhaust manifold vs my original 91 cast iron exhaust manifold
the ports of the cast iron manifold are actually 'cleaner' than the tubular(due to the welds). no idea if there is any performance difference.
    the tubular IS much lighter!

good pics of the front seals: big-nose vs short-nose
i'll be posting some related pics fairly soon

something i hadn't expected but interesting. this is a pic of three *different* varieties of the fwd MBSP.

on the left we have the MBSP out of a 95 2nd gen BP (actually Kia Sephia). this MBSP has no center rib....just like the 01 Miata MBSP.

in the middle and on the right is the 90-4 Protege MBSP with the center rib. there is a very subtle difference in the center rib main bearing mounting point between the two. you may be able to see it from this pic.
the one on the right has 2 small ridge's on either side of the mounting surface - just like what's on the other ribs. the one in the middle has no 'ridges'......
in other words, the one on the right looks like it was meant to be mounted to the center main bearing cap; whereas the one in the middle looks like it *could be* mounted to the center main cap, BUT it doesn't have the ridges on either side........
      make any sense??!

bty NONE of the MBSP's i've seen have ever been actually attached to the center main bearing cap. that center cap doesn't even have the bosses to accept the bolts of the MBSP....

        here's close-ups of what i'm talking about.
i'm thinking of using a spare main cap with the bosses and thus being able to attach the MBSP to ALL 5 caps

man the mysteries just keep on coming....

here are a set of pics of VICS. notice the green rod and golden butterflys - they are out of my 91 Protege dynamic chamber(DC). i took them out to put them into the 2nd gen DC that is currently on my original motor.

i picked up a (4/91 build) 91 Protege DC today which is the other pics you see. it uses a different rod and set of butterflys that are the same as the 2nd gen BP DC as well as an EGT DC that i saw a while back.

did Mazda use the less restrictive green rod/butterflys for only just a year or so?? did they only come in the 90 to early 91 Protege?? don't know yet.....

has anyone else seen the green rod in their DC?
