    Protege 1992 LX advice

I have the oppertunity to buy one of these for around $1k

    5spd Manual
    110k miles
uses 12oz oil in a week when driven approx 200 miles
clutch slips when acellerating really hard
    body in good condition.

How bad a problem is this clutch slipping and how much would it be to replace?
this doesn't seem to be a real do it yourself job to replace a clutch... Would it be fine if I could just learn to drive to avoid the slippage?

    Thanks everyone for your help!

If its burning oil and has a bad clutch 1k is kinda of a rip off.
If the oil leak is an easy fix and you can get clutches for cheap then I say go for it.

fyi: exedy make good oem replacement clutches for our cars.

The T3 BP MX-3 conversion has begun, and is taking forever & will kill me.

okay, well 1k is the asking price. we haven't bargained at all yet. What would you say the car is worth so that I can have a number to work with?

the seller said that he suspects an oil leak but hasnt seen any oil under the ground where it has been parked or anything. so i dunno.

      any other help is appreciated.

      thanks

Does the motor make noise on cold starts?
        How much does it smoke?
        does it have A/C?

If the paint is good and body straight it's worth the money because it's an LX.

If it's only 12oz of oil every 200 miles than you most likely won't see much of a stain. I was using about that much thanks to a valve cover gasket leak. I did the clutch myself in the driveway... but i'm a little more experienced than the average joe when it comes to front-drive imports An Autozone clutch kit (clutch/pressure plate/throw-out bearing) runs about 130 bucks... find someone to install it for you and you've got a relatively cheap/fun car!

Back in 2000 I bought a 91 LX for $1200, It had an oil leak at the oil cooler, and the clutch slipped bad. I paid $550 to have the clutch replaced. 3 weeks after that the clutch went out completely. Paid an additional $200 to get it replaced (I was out of town)
That is when I started to do work like that myself, Its easy to do once you grasp the concept. If you get it, my advice is don't get a Parts store clutch, mine was replaced with a parts store clutch, it did not hold up well, The best one is the Exedy clutch kit, cost about $110-130 online or ebay. BPT323 has one in his car, seems to work great, he can get second alot.

I need a better clutch... the Autozone clutch doesn't grab too great But I was in a hurry... and they had them in stock.
