    belts keep breaking

i own a escort gt...i know its not a protege but its a bg chassis and same motor as a lx....but i keep breaking the altenator belt....broke one about 2 months ago and fixed it and today i was putting in my mx-3 shifter....never touched anything under the hood. went to drive it around a bit and started smelling the burnt rubber smell so i stopped at the end of my drive way...didnt see anything so i drove it for about 15 miles. then stoped again at the gas station poped the hood and you could see that rubber was starting to build up on the altenator from the belt. so i drove home. about 1/4 mile from my house the battery light came on and my temp. started going up. got home and there was no belt there. so my question is why do i keep breaking belts..the first time when the alt. belt came off it knocked the other belt beside it off to.

long story short-2nd belt i broke in the last few months..nothing seems to be out of alignment and nothing seems to be scraping the belt by the alt. any suggestions?

it stretches enough to take it off the bottom end of the shifter (at least mine did) so i just took it off, did my mod to the shifter, and then put it back on after

The other thing that can cause that problem is parts that aren't lined up. My rallycar ate belts and we couldn't track down the problem till we noticed that the alt pulley wasn't in line witrh the others. Judicious use of washers solved that issue.
