    UNstable Gas Gauge problem

Now I am assuming that some of you, if not almost all of you had had that problem where the gas gauge goes up and down.
Mine almost changes a quarter tank while driving and its just a little annoying.

Has anyone figured out a way to fix this?

if i remember correctly its a problem with the sending unit in the tank. there is a howto somewhere to correct the problem.

you could just pay more attention to your odometer instead of your gas gauge. i know i always fill up at 260-280 miles (10 gallons). plus that way it's really easy to keep track of what kind of gas mileage you're getting.

              you can have few problems

first you have a replacement gas tank without a splash shield around the pump and gauge, when you drive, the gas movan and the float move with the waves in your tank. there is no solution for this case apart replacing the fuel tank with one including the splash shiled

second on cars with high mileage, the resistor on the level sender in the tank wear where the tank was most of the time during the car live usually it's around 1/4 and 1/2 tank at this moment when the sender is on the bad spot, your gauve will indicate empty. the solution is to replace the fuel sender unit

third if you have a 4wd car maybe your transfer pump is not working this will cause weird readings

I don't know if this counts for the protege, but I used to have a old Chevy that did the same thing. I first replaced the sending unit in the tank, no luck- I then replaced the gauge itself and worked like a champ. It seems that the gauge has a built-in damper in it to prevent this. Might help..
