I would recomeend a 90-94 LX, as mentioned before. Honestly they are awesome, but not to popular, cars. My car is probably the funnest that ive had and my most favorite being that its not a common car that you see modified, like a mustang, or honda, and this coming from me having owned a bunch of cars, from 2 13 second crx's, a 12 second talon, and 3 monster trucks (s10 blazers on 35 and bigger tires) I like the protege the best. Its alot more unique than the other cars ive owned. They dont have a huge aftermarket, but there is enough. You can get pretty much the same things for it as you could for a civic, minus a few exceptions, just not as many different brands. They are extremely light 4 door cars, can be made pretty quick and handle well for not to expensive, convenient with 4 doors, good gas mileage, low insurance for the most part. And not to many people would want to steal one like someone would like a civic. Just my 0.02!
      Eat ****.

goes without saying, don't bother with the automatic transmission.. weak gears, taller gears than the manual, only 4 of them to rip through.. pretty much makes the protege somewhat 'undesireable' to drive at some moments when you want that extra pick up. 94's will give you the 323 front end you can see in my signature, 90 - 93 will give you the straight hood. there are a few 13 second turbo'ed protege's here on the board.. all with aspirations of going faster to a degree. some suspension parts and hard to get items have been made available in the past curtousey of 'group buys' such as ss brake lines, lower tie bars front and rear, .. some that have fallen through probably due to high price or general uninterest.. just being honest. tons of **** is interswappable with the mx-3, 323, and certain years of the escort as well (this can be searched on for specifics). turbo motors are usually anywhere from 800 to 1300.. 2100 for a full front clip (e-bay is best for this, usually has 2 to 3 offered at any given moment). so the sky is the limit (reasonably) .
        peace

Yeah, definetly go for a 1st gen (90-94) LX. The are fun little cars even when they are stock. If you decide to get one, definetly look into the J-spec turbo motors. The GTX is nice with a small turbo that spools up fast and puts out 185hp and there is the all mighty GTR that has a bigger ball bearing turbo and beefier internals that puts out 210hp. Anyone on here that has a turbo motor can tell you that it makes for a nice little upgrade for the car. If you are lucky enough to find a GTR motor, it makes a day/night difference in the car. I can tell you this from experiance. I went fro ma 91 LX motor to a 92 GTR motor. All I can say is it was worth evey penny and would do it again. As far as reliablity, the Protege is a very durable and reliable car and if cared for properly, it will give you many years and many miles of enjoyment.
