draining A/C

Well I am tearing apart my 92 lx, my problem is the A/C... When I removed it out of my escort I had blown a line up so it drained itself. The car does not drive so going somewhere to have it done is out of the question... Plus I would really like to keep it intact possibly for a sale of a complete A/C system. Is there a way to decently safely, GENTLY relieve it of pressure or what?

check in the A/C section of your phonebook im sure there is a refrigerant tech that will come to you and salvage the R12 in the system for cheap.

legally NO its illegal as hell to open a ac unit and discharge into the air that being said you can crack one of the fittings loose slowly and then place a rag over it so the oils doesnt spray EVERYWHERE and it will. then turn it by hand till it starts to escape

Really im not worried about fines or anything as it is in a garage that can be completely closed to outsiders, so i dont even have to worry about the lookie loo tree huggin hippie neighbors callin the EPA on me. Reguardless of how i do it I just want to make sure i am doing it in a mannor safe to myself.

kinda like deflating a tire. where the caps are just push down and it'll release the pressure. sorry for the bad descripiton ive been but if you understand what im saying, i didnt tell you anything, and that is definatly not how i released my a/c.

For a start there is just over a pound of freon in the system so it is never gonna be consentrated enough to harm you. It is illegal to release it into the atmosphere but they have to catch you first. I am a commercial Refrigeration mechanic by trade and I laugh at all the political correctness now.

They tell us now about how freon is hazardous to your health and to the environment. For years us guys worked in high concentrations of the stuff, some commercial systems in food stores hold hundreds of pounds of that stuff. Nothing like walking into a compressor room full of freon in the air. Where do they think the stuff goes when a line breaks in a big system for Christs sake.

i think the idea is to prevent as many releases as possible. we all know breaks are going to happen but keeping as much of the controlable spills down will help

just cover one of the fittings with a rag and crack it until it starts hissing then go do something else for a few hours.

i drained it on my 95 and 91 escorts and i'm still alive. i just let the garage air out for a few hours. the oil mist can make a mess though, so be aware of that.

its only illegal if you get caught. Just dont do it in the EPA parking lot and you'll be fine
