Peugeot 205 design influence in the 323 hatchback?

I always liked the way the BG 323 hatchback looked like the Pug 205, but I can't find any hard evidence that Mazda "borrowed" the design. I can't even find who styled the 205 or the 323. Some say the 205 was styled by Pininfarina but others dispute this and argue it was done in-house.

I've seen other instances of Asian car makers being influenced by Euro car makers. The VW Golf and Hyundai Excel were both designed by Giugiaro and look alike. Another interesting point is that Wiki credits Giugiaro for styling the 1964 first gen Mazda Familia but not the BF 323 which seems to have more of his styling cues. You would really need to have your eyes checked if you can't see the similarity between the RX7 first & second gen and the Porsche 924 & 944.

There's too many similarities between the BG 323 and the 205 for it to just be a coincidence. The hatches seem to have the same curvature and the rear of the door has the same design of the metal part sticking out but not the glass. The rear lights bar design on the cars look almost exactly the same. There are some notable differences though. I hate to say it, but the 205 has a prettier design on the rear quarter glass. Obvious mechanical design differences include the intake and exhaust sides of the engine being reversed, the exhaust pipe ending on the opposite side, and the rear suspension of the 205 uses a torsion bar; but the front suspension on the cars are almost identical.

I'm hoping someone has a story about Mazda engineers picking apart a 205. Almost like the stories about them carefully analyzing the clicking sounds of the gears shifting in an MG when they were designing the Miata. Does anyone have any info that could explain why the cars look so similar?

Them Japan folks are long past masters at looking round to see what works (or sells), copying it, and putting a bit of Far East twist on it.
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

The 205 didn't show up on the scene until '83. The basic FWD GLC/323 hatch was farting about since '80. The progressive evolution of the Familia hatch matched was similar to all vehicles of the '80s. Becoming more aerodynamic and the addition of composite headlights from sealed beam bricks. What makes the 205 unique is its stretched out wheelbase at the rear with the funky C pillar sail panel. If any car is influenced by the wheel stretch I would have to say the Ford Ka. I cannot see a direct correlation of 323 from 205 with the exception of both cars came in FWD two door hatch models.

If you want to place influence, the '70s 104 and '80s GLC did have similar looks.

I agree that FWD hatchbacks were nothing new when the 205 came on the scene but I'm talking about shapes instead of figures or measurements. I think it's obvious that even though the BF and BG 323 share a similar platform, the design (by which I mostly mean just the style or shape) is completely different. The models up to the BF were simple, traditional hatchbacks of the 80's but with the BG they evolved into a completely different mushroom shape. The mushroom shape is what I associate with the stretched wheelbase and C pillar at a more aggressive angle. The 205 came out in 83 and the BG in 89, that's why I wonder if Mazda copied the design.
