What surfaces will these winter rally events be taking place on? A frozen lake? gravel roads? Tarmac roads? Empty fields in the back 40 of a farm somewhere?

I'd say invest in a set of snow tires (the ones with the actual alpine mountain/snowflake symbol on them.

and remove or at minimum disconnect your sway bars.

      Then start driving.

no, removing the stock swaybar is not illegal.

It's just a way to artificially raise spring rates when cornering, so the car rides more comfortably down the highway. Most people don't enjoy the slightly rougher ride that better-handling suspension gives.

Do you even HAVE frozen lakes in New Mexico?

Sarge ice races which is a great way to improve your skill. Stock spring rates are PLENTY soft. If you're worried about driving through Michigan in the winter there are 2 things you can do. Rather 1 thing to do and 1 thing not to do.

#1 don't drive like a jackass. If there's snow in the left lane and not in the right, drive in the right lane because that's where the traction is. In general, if you're not comfortable driving on the snow, don't pass anyone.

#2 Get a set of snow tires. Not all seasons, not mud tires, snow tires. Winter tires have specific rubber compounds for gripping the road in cold weather and for gripping ice. The tread pattern will help scoop snow also but for the most part the different rubber compound will help you the most.

FYI, studded tires are illegal in many states including Michigan and most of the states you'd have to drive through to get there. Studs will help on ice but they won't help in other situations.

                      They are fun.

Good studless winter snow tires are bridgstone Blizzak WS60. VERY sticky, Very good traction. They also wear out VERY fast on normal roads, lol!

the Blizzak WS-60's are very good on snow, and on ice as well, for the most part.

If you're mostly on snow, with little ice to drive on, I'd recommend something along the lines of a Winterforce (bridgestone, i think) or the General Altimax Arctic, and a Hankook I-Pike.

Those will last a little longer than the blizzaks will (and are also less expensive). The blizzaks ARE an awesome tire, but WILL wear quickly on the highways if there's not snow/ice to traverse. This year on the lake (Lake Winnebago, near Oshkosh, WI) people were having VERY good results runing the General Altimax Arctic tires.

cheap, and guys were pulling fast-time in class with those tires. the Gislaved Nordfrost did pretty good, too.

Oh, just for kicks, here's some in-car from the lake. Sorry for the crappy camera angle, I just taped the camera to my rear-view mirror, lol!

                          Youtube Link

195/60-14 Falken Azenis, with 108 1/4"x20x1.25" bolts per tire. Fronts are Sharpened with a 30° snowmobile stud sharpener, the rears weren't sharpened yet. BIG mistake, it was a handful to just keep from spinning with only the fronts sharpened. All stock everything, except the GTX transmission (VLSCD). and a rusted-out/straight-piped rear muffler. and some lights on the bumper. Disconnected swaybars.

Oh man that looks like fun. Such huge runoffs, you could get it all kinds of wrong and still have a car afterward. I approve of your driving style, set up the apex and stand on it. More power'd let you maintain yer drift angle better I bet!

Too bad your venue is so far away, I'd love to come out there and play...
