Here is a window sticker from a 1990 Protege SE.
The SE trim level was only for 1990, and is essentially the same as the 1991-94 DX. The rear nameplate also says "Mazda 323" in small print under the "ege" part of the nameplate, to get people familiarized with the Protege name. I think Mazda used the SE name to make its base model sound better, like the Ford Thunderbird Elan, or Subaru Impreza/Legacy Brighton.
I guess customers got confused, so Mazda changed it to DX.
