Have that stuff anyways, whether it's winter or not. (Never know when you might break down or get in a bad wreck in the middle of nowhere.) Well, similar stuff. I use led flashlights instead of candles, and I hate energy bars, so I have beef jerky, granola bars, pop tarts, dried apple slices, and some crackers. Also have water and gaterade, and an old US army surplus wool blanket. All packed in a gym bag that is in the trunk most of the time, but is put in the back seat when there are bad storms, in case I can't get back there.

Last Thursday the F4AEL started to make a few new noises, with a bit of a shift flare at 2-3, and chatter while in OD going uphill. Dumped in 1/2 pint of SeaFoam AT/PS cleaner, the 2-4 shift and chatter went away, but chunky noises and a turbo-esque whine from the torque converter told me it was getting near the end. Pulled the pan to find a metallic slurry of ATF, and the two magnets were so coated in ferrous metal they resembled Portobello mushrooms. Off to Japan Engines, and picked up an import unit for $500. Came off a late model something or another and spend the first day just replacing axles seals and transferring over all the Protege bits. 201,560 out of the original unit...


The F4AEL is dead... Long live the F4AEL.

Looking into the Sonnax spool valve for the 2-3 shift flare, but gotta look into the sloppy 1-2 shift first. Gonna pull the spool valve tomorrow and see if it has any crud in it.

I decided to find out what happened to my transmission, causing it to lock the front wheels on the interstate.

First, I gathered the proper tools.



Next, I got the case off. Everything looks like its still there.



First thing I checked was the magnet. Of course, it was full of metal.



Then I noticed something next to it. Little pieces of brass scattered in the bottom.



The problem was exactly what I suspected before I tore into it; the 3-4 synchronizer exploded, causing it to lock in third. You can see one of the splits in this pic.



I'm going to try to source a new synchro and rebuild it, since that should be cheaper than a new trans. And while its apart, I'm hoping to find an Mfactory LSD to throw in it.

reliable daily, so it'll get an 03 nose, wingless trunk, some suspension stuff, and maybe an intake. that'll be about it.

some other stuff you might want to consider for a nice dd is an s/r ecu, udp, and imo the iceman (from the s/r) with a modified stock airbox is a nice intake setup for dd, and a short shifter of some sort.

also you dudes with headroom trouble must be freakishly tall or something, I could wear a ****ing top hat and still have room.

I am pretty tall but the lack of sunroof is why you have lots of headroom. I only have an issue in my car which has a sunroof, my girlfriends ZX2 doesn't have a sunroof and I have plenty of headroom in it.

I'm 100% sure Matt will have a reply to the suggested Short throw shifter that goes like this:

"**** NO! ****ing piece of **** short throw shifters are complete ****."

AFAIK, Atomic does not like short shifters. Most likely he will put some crazy shift knob that looks like a dildo on the stock shifter, that way he can shift and steer with his right hand simultaneously, while blowing kisses to random people with his left hand.
