I picked mine up. Had to drive 7.5 hours to get it (including 2.5 hour through near blizzard conditions here in wisconsin..... Not fun) and then I had lots of trouble getting it strapped down on the tow dolly, as the wheel straps wouldn't fit over the driver side tire due to the damage. So I decided to pull the wheel off and put a mini spare tire on it. When I did, I noticed that the strut was bent, and the rest of the suspension looks great! I think I just scored on this car! It has very little rust, and while it's going to take a lot of work, I might repair the rear quarter panel and make this thing my daily driver and use my current daily driver as a parts car. I would feel horrible parting out a near rust free car, especially an s/r..... I plan on taking a better look at it in the near future, and maybe taking it to a frame shop to see if it has been bent at all after I replace the strut.

Good to hear you want to keep the s/r alive. Sound like a good plan getting it checked out. That quarter might be a pita, but if your good at bodywork it shouldn't be too bad. Looks like it took a pretty good hit though. Either way nice score.

Yeah, it looks pretty bad, and even worse in person . I actually thought it was damaged beyond repair until I pulled the rear tire off so that I could swap on the space saver spare tire for some extra clearance. Then I saw the rear strut was VERY bent, and nothing else looked bent, as if the strut took the entire hit instead of the rest of the suspension taking the hit. When I saw that, I had a feeling that the car might be fixable. And I really want to fix it up. I know how rare these things are, and it has almost all it's s/r parts still on the car, which is hard to find. (It's only missing it's centerforce dual friction clutch, and it's shifter boot is damaged, but still there.) And yeah, my dad and I would do the rear quarter panel work together, as he does body work as side jobs, and is really good at it.

Btw, does anybody know if polyurethane bushings wear out/soften like rubber bushings do? I am just sort of curious, as my car has it's original s/r polyurethane bushings, and now that the car has 180,000 miles on it, I don't know if I would see any benefits replacing them with new ones if I do decide to fix the car up.

there is bound to be some wear if not on the bushings then on the metal components. something has to be giving after 180 k

If anything they harden up with age. I have some old poly end link bushing around that are like bricks, and I dont remember them being that hard when they were new. I doubt there would be much wear if they were maintained (greased) but thats not likely to happen from average people owning it. Lack off grease seems to make the surface kinda flake off increasing clearance.

I would just remove them and check condition, if they look good, grease them and reinstall

Yeah usually the strut does a pretty good job at at taking the bulk of the damage. The shifter boot isn't a big deal, you can find someone with one or get recessbilly to make you one, his e brake boots are nice too, I'm putting one on my black s/r.

Poly bushing do wear out, and they dry out and disintegrate worse than rubber IMO. Look at what my sway bar bushings looked like after 200k km.
