Who bored the block to 85.5? was it this place?
    http://www.mccullyracingmotors.com/index_files/Page1100.htm

How much was the Maruha head gasket?

I know a B8 crank was used to save rotating weight, but especially since this is obviously a race engine you guys should have kept the BP crank and just had weight removed from it.

A local place bored the block. We didn't need to sleeve it as the machine shop sonic tested the block (and a few other ones, but only this one had enough material.) and they said there was just enough material to not use sleeves. But they said to not boost the engine, as there isn't enough strength for that.

We feel the b8 crank will be able to handle the stress. Also, we had the crank magnafluzed to make sure it wasn't cracked.

The head gasket costed $235. But that one was the only one we could find that could support the 85.5 mm bore.

How much did they charge you to test the block and then bore it?

Just hope that crank can take it and doesnt cause you some weird bearing wear.

Thats an expensive gasket, i wonder if it would be cheaper to have one custom made.

Sonic costing costed $35 per block. (we did 5 blocks to find the best. One block was actually cracked, and the rest had slightly thinner walls. Normal cost of a single block is $55, but since we were doing so many, the cost went down per block.) Boring costed $100.

And I'm hoping the cranks holds up as well. I've done some research on the crank, and I've found some of the miata guys running them up to 300 hp, so I'm guessing we're going to be ok. Although we will be revving it quite a bit more than the miata guys. (our plan is to set the rev limiter at 8800 rpm. Shift point is going to be 8300 rpm.)

And yes, the gasket is expensive. When I heard the guy on say that over the phone, I thought he said $135. And I said "what? $135??? That's pretty pricey! And then he said "no, I said $235." I thought he was joking, but he wasn't.... (lol, my buddy almost fainted when he heard me say $235.) I looked into getting a custom gasket made up by cometic, but they said it would take a few weeks and would cost $215 because they would just be making one. I decided to just order the Maruha one because it's been proven in other cars, and because I could get it quicker.

They don't handle boost well from what I've seen- those weights are great for N/A motors but it seems like the power delivery of a boosted car causes them to just slip. The clutch disc their kit comes with works pretty well, I'm using one with an old Spec pressure plate in my wagon.

I'd be surprised if you got away with that for long.

Seems like a serious investment overall, is the payout worth it?

What do you mean by that? You don't think megasquirt will work with this setup?

Payout is not much for most races. Enough to pay for the costs of the night and car maintenence, plus a little extra. But there is a $7500 to win race at the end of the year that we are hoping to win. But if we don't, it doesn't matter money wise. My buddy owns a local dentist business, and is well to do. He just wants a fast car to compete with the other fast cars that race there. Money is not an issue for him.

Megasquirt should work fine with that motor if you have someone to tune it, but assuming his competitors are not complete morons they will figure out that the car is decidedly not stock.

That's a fairly hefty investment just to possibly win $7500, but hey, it's not my money.

I've seen mixed reviews aswell. We shall see, if it last a year that's all Ill need. It was included with the car so I'm gonna give it a shot. Not to mention I can't/shouldn't try hard launches anyways. I doubt the motor is pushing even 200 at the crank; stock b6t with hks intake and exhaust with reich racing ecu. I may toss a vj11 in the place of my vj14.
