car will start and run for a few seconds then dies

93 protege lx just replaced motor and trans starts runs then dies after a few seconds like it choakes out. Will stay running if spraying starting fluid. Replaced Max and tips I'm thinking maybe clogged fuel filter or fuel pump relay. Any clues or advice would be greatly appreciated

VAF unplugged? It's easy to miss, I've done it many times myself. Could also be cracked intake duct.

Vaf? Is that the same as the Maf? Intake tube is brand new also

Similar thing happened to me, turned out to be a bad fuel relay. Would idle for a few seconds then die but if you try to give it throttle it would die immediately. Worth a check.

your car uses a VAF .. not it is not the same as a maf ... and yes he is referring to the fuel pump relay and it is located attached to the ecu and it is under the ashtray in front of the console
