    MSD Ignition Coil

    Well hello guys, one of my first post here on CP. I was seeing if I could get some help with my 93 Ford Escort GT. I've been acquiring the parts to give her a lil bit of kick, no turbo though. .maybe in the future lol. But one of those parts that I bought was the Street Fire Performance Coil that's branded by MSD. I've been looking for a basic write up or tutorial regarding these type of coil installs but to no avail I can't find one. Would anyone out there have a link with photos for the 1.8L BP/BG engine, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

    the stock coil is better. stick with it. alot your money into something more beneficial

        A stronger spark won't do much, if any, good on a stock engine. At best that new coil will net you a few extra degrees of ignition timing to play with, if even that. You're looking at minimal gains with a new coil right now, maybe 1-2 hp. Start with the usual stuff, intake and exhaust, first, and worry about the spark once you get to the point where you need to add more fuel, like with a turbo or a bigger NA build.

          Thanks for chiming in and I've gotten the filter at least for the intake, I'm waiting on the Lil adapter so I can connect it.

          But I'm not expecting miracles lol..I just want some direction in how to mount and install it since i mean, I did buy the thing so I would like to use it. I'm putting the money back now for the intake and exhaust. About the intake piping, I've heard that people like the 90-93 accord intakes but I haven't found a link to an install of one on here, would you have any insight on the matter

            And with the exhaust I'm thinking of going to this website www.siliconintakes.com to buy the 2.25" piping but as far as the cat. converter, should I invest in a HO cat and how much piping would I need in feet? They sell it in 1 and 2 feet. I want a grumble in my exhaust and not raspy or for it to drone while driving. I was looking at one of those N1 type mufflers on ebay. It's seems to be a str8 through type, what do you guys think. .I'm just towing ideas out there

              Oh and I just bought some ngk iridium plugs and ngk wires that I'm waitingto put on. My car has a story behind it, I need to start a work log to share with you guys out here, I'd really like some of your insight into these lil motors.

                I can't speak as to whether Accord intakes work, but installing the filter itself is easy. Just remove the old filter housing and install the new filter onto the MAF. For the exhaust, I can't say how much you'll need; I mainly deal with the newer Proteges myself, and I don't have much experience with the BP engines. I'm sure someone else here knows, or you can measure it yourself and go from there. I would probably just go ahead and get a high flow cat so you don't have to do more work later. Also, a brief search did turn up a Pacesetter catback system on Summit Racing's site; you may want to give that a look-see. If you're going for a custom setup, I like Thrush Turbo mufflers, personally. They require a bit of work to install sometimes (I bought a universal one that didn't come with hangers, but I cut the ones off of the old muffler and reused them on the Thrush), but they usually run about $30-40, and give a nice deep tone that doesn't get too loud or drone. The N1 is probably equivalent, as they're both straight flow type mufflers.

                Again, I don't have a ton of experience with the BP, but poke around at some of the worklogs and other posts on here for some more ideas about unlocking some power. Keep in mind, parts are becoming scarcer for these cars, so you may have to do a good bit of looking or get creative with some things.

                  Dang, thanks for that's info sir and yea I was looking at the Pacesetter a lil bit ago today. I was looking at a thrush turbo muffler yesterday and was wondering about the sound of them because they were coming from Autozone. If I were to get one, how big of an inlet/outlet should I consider? What's your exhaust setup if you don't mind me asking?

                    I'm currently running a stock system with a Thrush on it; the stock muffler finally rusted through after almost 20 years. It's the second Thrush I've used, and I've been very pleased with both. There are other options, of course; I went with the Thrush mainly because it was cheap and I like the sound. As for the size on yours, I'd say 2.5" is probably sufficient for you, unless you're planning some sort of monster build down the road. Even with a turbo setup later on, as long as you're not planning on running 30 psi, it should be more than sufficient. Somebody else may have more input on the matter, but I believe 2.5" will suffice for your needs. Keep in mind, you'll want to run the same size pipe from the header on down, and I don't know of anyone making BP headers currently, but then again I don't really look for them myself. Google will be your friend with that, though you may need to get one custom made.

                      I think 2.25 is, or used to be, the preferred size for NA BP applications. That might have changed at some point. I'm going off of memory from years back. 2.5 to 3.0 should be good for a turbo. 3" exhaust ought to be plenty for even a fairly large turbo on a BP.

                      I'm currently choking my engine with stock exhaust and stock mufflers because they refuse to rust through or fall off. I'd love to have a 3" setup from the turbo back with a nice smooth downpipe and probably a glasspack type muffler, if any. I suppose I'll get to it one day.

                        Yea from what I've read on here and FEOA since I'm coming from there, 2.25 seems best for non turbo ventures.

                        I'm going to advance auto today so ima check out one of those thrush mufflers today. Man I thank yall Hella much for the responses, FEOA seems mad dead their way which is unfortunate.
