I did the quick and easy way, took the belt off. That's only a temporary thing though. Eventually I'll get a MX3 rack and do the depower thing.
Here's the link for the flyinmiata page http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/depower.php
Same basic concept to depower the BG racks.

You can depower it like they are talking about or you can do like I did and replace the steering rack with a manual one. I did this about 2 weeks ago. Grab the manual rack from a 323 or pro dx with manual steering. Then just remove anything powersteering related in the engine bay. The only downfall to doing it this. Way is you lose your lock to lock closeness.

You can depower it, get a manual rack, or do what I did.

I removed my reservoir, cooler, pump and bracket, and looped the lines together. It's a little hard to turn the wheel when you're not moving, but you get used to it.

ya im liking the manual steering rack thing... but does it matter what year i get it from? (from an mx3 or the dx)...

I did the remove all the power steering stuff and loop the lines like Jho in my escort gt. Worked pretty well, hard to turn but felt much more connected if that makes sense. I actually liked it better that way, the manual rack in my 323 doesnt feel as tight and its easier to turn. I guess its really a matter of preference though.

Bust out your FSM's and find the rack with the highest ratio.

On the BF it's the GTX rack and it won't fit a fwd chassis. iirc, the fwd PS rack has higher ratio than a manual rack. And the '95 Capri rack was even quicker.

I'd guess that the MX3 RS or GS has the quickest ratio rack.
There's shops that'll quicken the ratio on your stock rack. $$$...
Or you could look for an electric PS pump at the junkyard and run thinner PSF(Pentosin, Redline).

The mx3 rack has a closer ratio than pros or 323s. Talk to ryan(bpt323) and ask how to depower that. The way he does it it won't be so hard to turn but you don't lose the lock to lock ratio. I already purchased my rack before I found this out so I just used mine. I like the manual rack because its easier to turn compared to the looped method. But I do wish I had the mx3 close ratio. 1 day I guess.

gearboxes have closer ratios, steering racks (gearboxes) have quicker ratios

I can pull MX3 racks if it's worth it to you guys, socal junkyards have everything. I'll even remove the seals if you pay me for the work.

is the only reason you would do this is so that the powersteering doesnt bog down on themotor?
