anyone done this with the rack in the car?
does anyone know the part number for the inner tie rod tool, that will work with the egt/protege?

yea theres a tool for it, makes life 20 times easier. You can get them at harbor freight for like 30-40 IIRC. It's cake to do really.

A very large pair of channel locks will do it if you cant find the tool or a wrench big enough. You can turn the wheel all the way to one side to bring it out far enough so its easier to get too.

i see on parts store websites they list one for a ford gear and mazda gear,
i would assume that means 1.9 sohc ford car vs 1.8 dohc mazda car, but i thought both racks were the same as long as they were power racks, iirc the manual (non power) rack might be different thou.
        so what gives?

No thats referring to some early cars came with a power rack that was Mazda, which I think is only 91's. I also think that all pony manual racks are Mazda racks. Look on rockauto for pictures, but a 93 should have the Ford rack

Pony racks are ford racks. My grandpa used a pony rack in his escort lx when he wanted to get rid of the power steering.

Of course it fit. The fact that it uses the mazda inner tie rod makes it a mazda rack. The pony rack and early escort racks (91) use mazda inner tie rods and different rack mount bushings. The later ones use Ford inner tie rods and a different style rack mount bushing that are shared with all other escorts till 03.

One is a Mazda design rack and the other is a Ford design.

I just used a big adjustable wrench, or a slip-joint (channel-lok) pliers. no need to remove the rack at all. but it IS kind of tight.

how does that tool work? the insert is sized to go over the flats on the inner tie, and the tabs fit a slot in the tool head, then it just slides over the whole tie rod? pretty slick!

a large pipe wrench with a snipe on it works and its a lot cheaper option
