I think the only thing that would be of use would be the valvesprings from the 1.6L mainly. The part numbers are different but we need to compare them for things like OD, ID, # of coils, free hight, spring rate, etc. If they actually fit, let's hope they are stiffer also.

If someone with a Z5 wanted to try different cams, the ones to try would be the "lean burn" cams that TheMAN posted about recently. At least it would seem that they are direct swap. And they were designed for a 1.5L.

The late DOHC conversion should be a no-brainer based on the part numbers. It looks as if you would need the 2 cams (intake & exhaust), 2 cam gears and fasteners, along with the 3rd gen 1.6L timing belt kit. But that isn't my problem.

Attempting the 1.6L variable valve timing head swap onto the Z5 is a little too ambitious for me. As mentioned, at the very least you would have to devise a way to control/tune the variable valve timing and consider intake and exhaust manifold interchangeability. I would be ecstatic if only the valvesprings swapped over and were an improvement.

    Huh?

Only the cam gears are the same. Cams, valves, springs, etc. all have different part numbers.

I'm a little cloudy on what we're looking at now. Swapping the 1.6l cams and valvesprings set-up onto a dual cam gear z5 head, Didn't you mention checking the head gaskets to see if maybe it would be a direct bolt on, or something along those lines?
I found some similarities between the 99+ 1.6 head and the z5 head. The head bolts are the same but I am having trouble finding gaskets for the 1.6 to see if they are the same. I was just trying to find out if the heads are the same because the 1.6 has a cam position sensor that from the few pics I could find looks to be in the same spot on the head as the plug I found
or did i read that wrong?

so i guess you can be the guinea pig and see if the 1.6 springs fit and work in the z5. might just solve the problem, also ask pigeon, he might have already tried that, or found out that info.

    1.6 from the 3rd gen?

I could tell you if they're different part numbers. I wouldn't be able to say if they have different spring rates or whatever.

    Z5 valve springs: Z501-12-125
    ZM valve springs: ZL01-12-125

You are the ****. I searched for hours and found nothing, great info. Any guess as to the differences in valve springs on the 1.6 and the 1.5?

    True DOHC cams
    Intake Part#: Z502-12-420 $152.06
    Exhaust Part#: Z502-12-440 $152.06

    Chain driven cams
    Intake Part#: Z501-12-420A $164.59
    Exhaust Part#: Z501-12-440A $164.59

    Cam gears are different.
    Here's the new part#: Z502-12-425 $47.03 each (used on 1.6L 3rd gens too)
Adjustable cam gears for the 3rd gen?

    Timing belt part#: Z502-12-205-9U $36.97 (used on 1.6L 3rd gens too)

    Tensioner spring part#: Z502-12-711 $3.90

Timing belt idler part#: B660-12-730C $53.48 (same part number as on the BP engine)

One can buy a 1.6L 3rd gen timing belt kit (belt, tensioner, idler, spring, etc.) for the true DOHC Z5. All the parts are the same.

Buy them here individually (Mazda OEM): http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...89&catalogid=0

Does anyone know where you can buy the true dohc camshafts? I am still having trouble locating them in the US.

sounds about right from when i had my valve cover off checking it out, sorry guys i couldn't keep the poor thing, just too much room, and wasn't top of my list of "needfull things". otherwise we'd be able to test the theories out on it.

Well as if I don't sound crazy enough right now I am sure the true dohc setup will swap to our heads. The only differences are the cams, timing belt, and idler pulley, as well as an oiling hole in our heads for the chain tensioner. I will get some pics up later on of my head and show the differences. It looks like the cams will bolt right in as a replacement to ours and the idler pulley will have to be removed, as well as putting the dohc timing belt on, but that is all their is to it. I don't know the difference in cam lobes though so their may be some lifter work to do.
