    AC Compressor Pulley?

Ok, After spending several days looking for the source of this weird chattering noise from my motor area, I've found the problem. My AC compressor outer part of the pulley was loose. This is the part that is able to free spend when the car is off. So I tightend that up as much as I could. Well that helped get ride of the chatter that it was making..but it still makes a noise. When I turn on the ac, it ingages the outer portion the pulley and the noise goes almost completely away. My question for you guys is:

CAN THE PULLEY ITSELF BE CHANGED ON A AC COMPRESSOR? IF SO HOW HARD IS IT?. also could u over tension the ac/ power steering belt to cause it to make this weird noise?

The part that I'm talking bout is the part all the way left of the pic. If your looking from left to right then its before the area where the belt would be!

My AC compresser is making odd noises as well, it may need the same thing done in the near future. Let us know how it goes and post pics if you can!

        AC Clutch noise

I had a chattering at idle after the engine warmed up. AC off, noise. AC on, no noise. Took the belt off, the pulley sounded like a bearing with no grease. I replaced the compressor instead of just the pulley because its a '95 with 103k miles. Cost just under $300 for a rebuilt compressor w/clutch, filter-drier, oil, and two cans of R-134. Took about 3 1/2 hrs due to rusty fasteners breaking off.

If you buy the parts from Auto zone check the size of the filter against the old one. The new one is about 1 1/2 in. taller and required bending one line to clear.

Yea that was the problem. The bearings were bad, and of course Mazda had to be special and make it to wherre you couldnt just replace the bearings. So what me and the mechanic did was...took of the hub where the bearings go... put some hi performance grease in there, put it back on, and then put a little be more grease. It stopped all noise. Now its just a matter of how long it will hold!

RacerX, did you completely remove the compressor to grease the bearings or with the unit still on the car with the A/C lines still attached?

The mechanic that I took it too, left everything still attached. He just somehow removed the hub and put some grease in there!

That's what I thought. The other way would have meant more work and greater expense.

Anyone know what size belt is needed to bypass the AC compressor? I don't want to put the money into the AC, but I'd like to have power steering again someday. Mine's a '97 with a Z5

                  Thanks!
