    car engine sputtering when accelerating

    i have a 1998 Protege LX 1.8L Auto.

i changed the spark plugs twice to try and fix my horrible fuel economy and the fact that the car is at 250 000 with the original spark plugs in it. the first set of spark plugs were the NGK something and they were the right ones but they were copper head and when i put them in the car still ran like crap.

so i go to the store and buy the platinum NGKs and gap them to .044. i also bought a bottle of this fuel addictive stuff that was recommended to me. so i go to fill up the car but i put in the addictive first then i fill up. when i drove out, the car was like a jet taking off, but the next day it was like it had a mad hangover and the check engine light has been on since.

btw, at this time, i had n the platinum spark plugs. so for the next week, every time i accelerate or drive, the rpm gauge is flickering, and when im in an intersection and waiting to turn im crapping myself because im pressing on the gas but the car just bogs. but it dosent die out. it manages to stay alive.

wat do i do? and there is a rattling noise coming from under the car. and the check engine light wont turn off. it stays on, do you think the engine is adjusting to the new plugs?

find out what the code is on the light first if possible. Your problem sounds very similar to one I'm having with my Prizm, just your is more extreme. I need a new O2 sensor. Mayb it'd be worth it to have your tested

o, and any additive you add to your gas tank, you add after a full fill up, never before you fill up.

Depends on the additive sometimes. I've used a few STP things and some say "tank at least half full" others say "with a full tank". I know guys don't really like reading directions, but they do help, lol.
