    Transmission/Differential/Clutch ticking noise

    Hey guys. I understand that I am posting in the wrong generation but I figured that I could still get information for those that look view this generation. So check it:

    *The Problem*
    I have a problem with my '99 Mazda Protege ES with a manual short shifter. The car has got ~215,000 miles on it and with the cold weather recently it started making a ticking noise when I let my foot off of the gas. Whether I'm in gear or out of gear, clutch engaged or disengaged, applying the brakes, in between shifts, turning, or any scenario where my foot comes off of the gas when I am actually moving greater than ~5mph, the car makes a ticking noise. It goes away immediately after touching the gas. You can feather the gas and make the noise come and go.

    *The Sound*
    The noise is similar to a cv joint noise or a card attached to your bicycle tire to create a ticking noise when it smacks repititiously up against your spokes. The faster you go the more repititious it is. I can somewhat feel it in my stick shift. Not a whole lot, but it's there. The noise makes a slight pitch change when putting stick into a gear.

    *Possibility*
    1.) A night or two prior to me hearing this noise for the first time, I was stuck (thanks to listening to my wife) in an icey parking lot where I had to get out. I did rock the car somewhat by going back and forth from reverse to 1st a few times to try to get out. In this case I didn't let the RPMs drop between going back and forth, nor was the transmission grinding and it didn't feel like I hurt anything. When I told my buddy about this, he told me I may have strained the transmission doing this. Possibly a problem?
    2.) About a month prior to this noise event I had my transmission flushed of Redline MTL and replaced with generic 75W-90. Could this cause a problem?
    3.) The bitter cold weather.
    4.) The mileage.

    *Diagnostic*
    1.) Took it a place where they said it was the transmission. I can get a used one with 88,000 miles on it for $1100 (with labor) from FL.
    2.) Took it to a tranny shop. Cost $50 to run diagnostic. They said the tranny, but not ruling out the clutch. $1800. $2100 with fixing clutch.
    3.) A buddy said possible engine mount problems. I understand this but I don't think this is it.
    4.) Another mechanic told me over the phone it could be the differential.

    *Issue*
    I don't have that kind of cash running around. If I have someone else do it for cheaper, then I risk the possibility of having them fix one thing, but that may end up not being the problem.

    Does anybody know what this could be? Anything maybe within the transmission, differential, etc...? Anybody ever experience this before when the throttle is released while the wheels are moving?

    Thanks in advance! The quicker, the better on this.

      well, to be honest, BF-BJ chassis mazda transmissions all have similar differentials.
      under abuse the differential "spider gears" will take a beating. this could be part of what your hearing. to diagnose this i suggest a bright flashlight through the axel hole inspecting the condition of the gears.

      Since it is a rotational noise you are hearing, do not rule out anything else that could be turning as well. I.E. axels/wheel bearings/such. not to make you worry. it could be just something as simple as a rock in the dust shield.
      Without a visual inspection its hard to say. If you have the opportunity i suggest PM'ing "MAZKID" as he has alot of mazda experience & good connections- a trip to st. louis could yield all of your answers

        Differential sounds like it's the problem. Are the transmission and differential one unit in my vehicle? Meaning if something goes wrong with the differential then I have to replace my transmission with a different transmission?

        Can I use a different vehicles transmission other than a '99 Protege ES (manual) for a replacement on my vehicle? What other types of vehicles?

            My vehicle has a FP-DE with a F25M-R. Any FS motor powered vehicle will work?

            Is there a way to get a list of vehicles and years that would work for my '99 Protege ES (1.8L)? I understand the FS motor powered vehicles but finding a list of these vehicles is a little difficult. A webpage or some information would help.

            On www.protegefaq.net I found out that there are a few, but I don't know what cars they are. I'm thinking protege.

            2.0 liter engine (FS-DE)
            2.0 liter engine, high power (FS-ZE)
            2.0 liter Turbo engine (FS-DET)

            Any more info on any of this would help.

              all 3rd gen mazda protege's including the P5 (with FS/FP motors) some mx6's & 626's also come with a FS motor
              the FP is still a FS based bellhousing so no worries

                well i would bet its definatly coming from your transmission...my 97 protege made the same noises..i mean exactly the same noises you describe. wouldn't you know it...not only the diff. but just about every gear was destroyed when i pulled the trans out. i fortunately found a lower mileage transmission for $40. i installed it myself and the noise disappeared. it drives much better than when i bought the car.

                out of curiosity i took the old trans apart... i was very suprised as to what i found. as i took it apart nothing but broken teeth fell out of it.

                  After doing some research I found that the vehicles listed below have FS/FP motor codes and the transmissions are compatible/interchangeable. Correct? Are there any others that I am missing? Does the KL-DE work too?

                  Vehicles:
                  Mazda Protege '99-'03
                  FP-ZE Motor (1.8L) [My Car]
                  FS Motor (2.0L)
                  FS-ZE Motor (2.0L)

                  Ford Probe '93-'97
                  FS Motor (2.0L)

                  Mazda MX-6 '92-'97
                  FS-DE Motor (2.0L) [RS-base model]

                  Mazda 626 '93-'97
                  FS Motor (2.0L) [base model]

                  Wikipedia said that these vehicles listed below have had FP & FS motors. Is this legitimate information? I mean Wikipedia is listing '93-'02 for 626's having FS motors. From what I gathered, only '93-'97 Mazda 626 2.0L motors are FS motors. Does anyone have any light/confirmation on this?

                  FS Applications:

                  * 1993–2002 Mazda 626
                  * 1993–1997 Mazda MX-6
                  * 1999–2001 Mazda MPV (Japan)
                  * 1999–2003 Mazda Capella
                  * 2001–2003 Mazda Protegé (2.0L models only)
                  * 2001 Mazda Protegé MP3
                  * 2002–2003 Mazda Protegé 5
                  * 2003-2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protegé
                  * 1993–1997 Ford Probe

                  FP Applications:

                  * 1992–1993 Eunos 500
                  * 1997–2001 Mazda Capella
                  * 1999–2000 Mazda Protegé (ES models only)
                  * 1998-2003 Mazda 323 Astina & Protege (Australia)

                      So I had the transmission taken apart and I need:

                      Pinion Shaft (19 teeth -- 3 marks on it)
                      Ring Gear (78 teeth -- 3 marks on it)
                      Spider Gears (10 teeth)
                      OverHaul Kit with sync rings and bearings.

                      Can anybody help me out with this as far as where I get these parts? Does anybody have any? Any info would be appreciated.

                      The teeth were chipped/broke/cracked. Not sure how it happened. As for the spider gears...all (4) of them need to be replaced. When I say 10 teeth, that's for the smaller 2 spider gears.

                      Ideas?
