ES and DX, LX how to tell

Im about to do an engine swap from an mx3 to a BP ES 1.8L however i dont know how a ES engine bay looks like compared to the other models i plan on getting something from ether a 95-98 second gen protege if you could give me some differences it would be appreciated thank you and god bless you.

Biggest difference: the engine. The Z5 has a depression on the valve cover where the oil cap is. I think the BP is just straight from one end to the other. I could be wrong about the BP cover though, since I've never seen a BP second gen. Could always check the side of the engine for either a BP or Z5. Also, if you want to make sure it's an ES, check the fender in front of the black door molding for the ES sticker. I'm sure there's something I've missed with the engine, but other members who have a BP can chime in on that.

Why do you only want to use the 2nd gen protege motor? Tons of people drop the first gen bps in

The reason i want a second gen protege its because the sec gen protege has a OBDII just like the 95 mx3 and thank u for the replies

I thought it was something with the OBDII. Hopefully you can find what you need.

The z5 intake manifold looks like a set of tube headers.
The BP one doesn't. There really is a huge difference.

my bp is out of a 96 kia... obd2, metal oil pick up tube, oil squirters, mbsp....

i didn't end up hooking up everything (went megaquirt) but the main harness for the injectors and such is the same (had to switch 2 pins) same crank sensor and crank wheel (didn't end up using the crank sensor, but they are exactly the same)

and i'm guessing the 96 egt would have obd II also since it was required by the government. the only reason i bring this all up is cause a protege bp (95-98) are really freakin expensive (found like maybe 2 around me for 600-700) where the escorts are a little spendy too (considered a performance engine cause it was the faster of the 2 available) and the kia's (got mine for 350 cause they didn't have the one i actually wanted so they took off 50 bucks...)

also iirc (the reason i mentioned all the things in the first line) the protege bp's didn't come with oil squirters, mbsp, and a plastic oil pick up, so you pay more for less

EDIT: 2 things 1: the egr's are different, i'm sure if you were really good w/ wiring diagrams you could just rewire where you need everything... just thought id throw that out there
2: not two thread jack, do all bp's have variable intakes or some type of vics?

Some Miatas did not. All FWD applications except (I think) the North American Proteges did.
