my opinion would be based on some background info.
do you ever park in a parking lot?
would it ever be net to another car?
will there ever be an open door collision possibility?

if you answered yes to these question i would say keep them.
engineers put allot more thought into these things then we do, and i believe the extra added bump guard would be worth the line down the center.

I personally believe they should be kept, and just painted to match the car color.
