You need an OBD2 code reader/scanner to pull the codes on a second gen.
If you live in the US, I'm told there are auto parts stores where you can rent a scantool or ask to borrow one so you can check the codes yourself. I don't know of any places near me that will let me do that. I will have to bite the bullit and buy my own one of these days.
If you can't get access to a code scanner yourself, you will have to go to a shop and have them pull the codes for you.
Good luck.
1998 Mazda BHALP SE - Rain Forest Green Mica
Pacesetter short shifter ; Depo tails (thanks beetle_orange) ; Custom CAI nearing completion ; CF hood on the way ; Brembo blanks & KVR pads to be inst. (thanks Pigeon) ; Goodridge brake lines to be inst. ;
But it says:
* With a single code display, tells what is wrong with car in 15 seconds
* Patented all-in-one display shows 19 vital pieces of information
* Works on 1996 and newer domestic, Asian and European vehicles
Any suggestions on what to do first? Is this a DIY job or should I take it to a mechanic?
Also, should I still be driving this car?
Update: I don't know if this helps diagnos the problem, but I cleared the code and the light stayed on. Normally, it would take a little while for the computer to find the problem again, no? After turning the car over, when all bulbs fire, the engine light stayed on as if I never cleared it.
I noticed today that a clear, slightly odorless liquid, is dripping out of the exhaust pipe while the car is running. Could this be related to the engine light? Or is this a whole new problem?
