    Dead heater/ac blower fan

The fan for my heater and a/c only work when the lever is in certain positions. It will work at 1, off at 2, on when it's just after 2, off at 3, on just after 3, off at 4. If that makes sense to anyone. I found this out by hitting the A/C button. It would only light up when the fan was on. My dad thinks it's the switch itself. Any other opinions?

What kind of switch do you have for the fan? I.E. is it purely electric or is there a knob with a cable or something behind it? If it's straight electric it's most likely the switch. If there's a cable that may be the cause. They can stretch sometimes and cause problems. Also, the A/C light typically isn't on unless the fan is running. That's not unusual.

could be the switch contacts, they do get pretty hot. maybe pull it and check for cracked solder joints?

Also, it could be the resistor pack that mounts on the bottom of the fan. two screws to take it out, if I remember correctly, kinda awkward to get to for some people, but it's easy enough.

Thanks guys, I'll take a look when I get a chance.

Also, yesterday before and after work the fan turned on at 1, 2 and 3 (still dead at 4), instead of 1 and just after 2 and 3. This morning it onlys turned on at 1, nowhere else. I'll keep you updated.

Now it's only working on 1 and 3.

In every case I've seen "dead" spots are caused by a defective blower resistor...it's mounted on the side of the blower housing with two screws and has a large electrical connector going to it. I was able to resolder the one on my truck but on the Protege I ended up replacing it after I bought the car. It was working on 2 speeds only and wasn't blowing as hard as it should have on #4.

i'm 99.99% sure it's the blower motor resistor. never looked for the one on our cars. but most likely it'll be visible as soon as you drop the glove box out.

It's the resistor pack / network block.

I Replaced it with a BG unit. A few wires had to be rearranged on the plug, but it was easy to figure out with the fsm and a meter.

Resistor. Get a new one and prepare for some awkward bending.

Being small should help with the awkward bending, haha.

So I have to drop the glovebox to find this thing?
