rear disc brakes

My wife has a 2003 Protege with awful drum brakes on the rear that howl when they do work and they're a pain in the ass to adjust.
I can't imagine my 98's are gonna be any better. So is there a way t covert to disk on my 98?

Maybe ?? I have a 97 touring edition and it has disks in the rear..

Yes. You can install the rear discs from/for a model that had factory rear discs. The ES model in the US, LX model in Canada has rear discs and larger front brakes.
