Odd Rattling at Idle?

Hey, as the title says, i have a weird rattling noise... when i first start my car there is a moderatly loud rattling noise coming from the engine compartment area of under the car.. it almost sounds like a loose heatshield, or something rattling around in the exhaust.. it only happens at idle, when i rev it a little it goes away completely, but once it goes back to idle it rattles away again?

I had something very similar to that once. What happened is the heat shield on the very bottom part of the exhaust manifold kind of acts like a trap for things that fall or break and fall down there. A rusty bolt fell off of the heat shield into the heat shield and bounced around under there between the heat shield and exhaust pipe (right at the spot where it turns and goes the length of the underbody). It bounced around and sounded like popcorn at certain rpms and when idling.

I just removed the hatchelled all together and it disappeared immediately. Check under your car and see if that is it.

I had a heat shield that rusted and was making all sorts of noise, so I'd say your guess is a good place to start. Just get it up on a lift and poke around.

I did drop my coolant overflow cap down into the engine bay, it has yet to be recovered

Mine rattles during acceleration. I broke one of the bolts off the heat shield after the first cat from getting airbourne.
