    Motor Mount Replacement

    I have a 1.6L/w 5 speed manual.

I've had no luck searching for any how to articles on the motor mount replacement for these cars. Researched has showed me that these can be problematic. It's not an expensive fix and can prevent headaches down the road. I'm wondering if it is just a simple matter of lifting the engine and swapping them out or is it substantially more involving.

Thank-you for any info you're able to provide.

    Welcome to CP.

Essentially, supporting the engine and swapping them out is the way to replace engine mounts. Consult a FSM for the proper torque settings.

Are your current mounts in bad shape or are you intending to switch to stiffer types?

Thanks for your reply! To this thread and my other one.

I don't think my motor mounts are really bad, but I want to replace them anyways with OEM or similar.
What would be the advantage of stiffer motor mounts?

        You're welcome. Glad to help.

Stiffer engine mounts can reduce wheel hop coming off the line. Although not especially useful for stock engines, some individuals with modified engines find them beneficial in terms of putting power to the ground. I replaced the #3 engine mount in my car with the stiffer MSP engine mount because it improved shifting slightly by reducing relative motion between gearbox and shift mechanism. The mod also increased vibration in the stick as would be expected but not too obtrusively.

However, you have to be careful when utilizing stiffer engine mounts in conventional inline-4 engines because it is an inherently unbalanced configuration. Although the primary unbalanced force can be eliminated, a secondary harmonic unbalanced force whose frequency is twice that of the crankshaft rotation remains. It is this secondary unbalanced inertia force that is responsible for the pronounced vibration of the engine. Changing to stiffer engine mounts will increase the amount of vibration as, unlike inline-6 engines that can be brought into perfect balance, inline-4 engines depend upon their engine mounts for a good portion of their vibration control.
